It was a very nice morning at the tea factory. Our tour guide was very kind and explained a lot of things about the tea and other plants in the fields. His name starts with P, I don’t remember the name exactly, he was very kind. We also saw a domesticated Mongoose and ate some chocolate cake and had some tea. It was a very nice experience.

L D — Google review

It was such a great experience! We wondered around tea plantations, visited tea factory, tried tea with cake and all of that free of cost with a great English speaking guide. I would highly recommend this activity.

Nadiya K — Google review

As a tea person, this place was like tea heaven for me! Everything was amazing and you get to know so much about tea manufacturing and much more.

Abeer S — Google review

Very informative walk around with a member of staff (he did tell us his name but I've forgotten it, sorry!), discussing the plants, and the ethos of the plantation. Stopped for a cup of black tea and chocolate cake, then on to the factory. Unfortunately it wasn't a day for processing (about every 2 weeks so may want to check first). Tea tasting for a long as you want to stay. Absolutely no rush here, it was a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours. There was no hard sell either, buy if you want. Thank you for a lovely morning.

Amazing experience.. not just tea but growing so many other things you get to pick, taste and smell! Fantastic tour. Tour guide very good explaine everything

Brandon N — Google review

Its a nice piece of history with awesome guide and tasting and free cakes.Loved the way the guide was explaining about the plantation.Entrance 2$ per person. The tea they sell there are a bit overpriced but they are unique and at first hand.White tea too make you look young super expensive 😅 (40$)

Wonderful tour of tea plantation. I’ve been another tea plantation around Kandy and this one trumps it with the aromas of different leaves demonstrated, tea tasting and a good selection of wonderful teas in the shop. Very knowledgable guide with excellent English.

Matt H — Google review

An interesting tour, the guide was knowledgeable. Not a difficult walk around the estate (no horses!). We had tasting session in the shop so you knew the flavour of tea you were buying.

Celia J — Google review

We really enjoyed tour of the estate. We were walking in a group of six, the guide explained everything briefly, showed us important plants, processing of cinnamon and tea. We stopped for nice cup of tea and piece of cake and finished the tour at their shop where we could taste from many types of tea. Amazing! We were really glad we made it.

Barbora H — Google review

Beautiful place and experience, learning about how tea is planted and manufactured.🌱🌱Lots of other plantations around as well, cinnamon, rice, rubber trees, mahogany..🌳🪴🌴Tea tasting was cool in the garden with fresh cakes. 🍰🫖🫖🫖A welcoming family atmosphere.

Dalia A — Google review

We managed to get the tour with the owner himself. It is very interesting man with a lot of stories about the tea and the world itself. He also wrote a few books. The Tea is a bit expensive but considering the quality I would say it is o.k.

Juraj M — Google review

We recently visited the Herman Tea Plantation in Handunugoda, and it was a captivating experience. The tour included an in-depth look at the production of both black and green but also white tea. We were especially fascinated by our visit to the black tea factory, where we saw the journey of tea from freshly harvested leaves to finely sorted products. The plantation's diverse range of teas, enhanced with unique flavors like pepper, hibiscus, and cinnamon from the plantation, was impressive. The tasting session was a highlight, allowing us to savor different teas, including the exquisite Virgin White tea, which stood out as a special treat. We also appreciated the opportunity to see the tea plant nursery, adding to our understanding of tea cultivation from its very beginning. The beauty of the plantation, combined with the informative tour and warm hospitality, made our visit truly memorable. For anyone interested in the art and science of tea-making, Herman Tea Plantation Handunugoda is a must-visit destination.

Sven T — Google review

This place is amazing. It is a beautiful plantation and we had an incredibly knowledgeable tour guide who gave such in-depth information into their tea growing (and flavouring - cinnamon, pepper, vanilla etc) as well as their tea making process. This was the highlight tour of trip into the south of Sri Lanka and highly recommend it to anyone, even if you don’t drink a lot of tea!

Mirissa Beach is a renowned tourist destination in Sri Lanka, popular for its surf and seasonal whale watching. It boasts a picturesque tropical setting, with powdery pale sand and azure waters lined by coconut palms. The beach extends from the west to the east where it meets GalleMatara Rd. Its centre features a sandbar that connects to a small island accessible during low tide, making it an idyllic spot for photography enthusiasts.

One of the stunning, spectacular and pristine beach in Sri Lanka. You can go for water sports as well. There are so many restaurants with moderate prices and long happy hours deals. For me, it was a happy long time there. The beach was absolutely clean. Good sand and moderate waves. You can float along with water. You can go for boating, whale watching and other water sports as well. There are life saving guards on the sea shore. You can get assistance from them anytime.

Archchana K — Google review

Mirissa Beach was the highlight of our trip to sir Lanka, it’s by far the best beach to explore on the island. They have everything you could wish for, surfing lessons, snorkeling equipment rentals, whale watching tours, sea turtles, restaurants & hotels line the beach!

CC S — Google review

This is the most recommended beach when I ask around the local people. The beach is very nice and famous for surfing. But I see the waves are quite strong so it is recommended to those experienced surfers.During my visit in early May, the crowd was reasonable.

Anandharaj S — Google review

I love Mirissa!! Nice blue water!Mirissa is a long beach, so you can enjoy staying anywhere at the beach. You can do sunbathing there. The water is quite rough sometime which is why it's a good place for water sport too. I liked floating along with the waves. You can do snorkeling near the rock.Guys, It is the best place for sunset too. If you like watching sunset, you should never miss this place!!!Mirissa is also famous for whale watching, but you should book in advance and as I know most of whale watching tours leave Mirissa early as 6:30am. So, make sure you don't make mistakes like I did.

I recently visited Mirissa Beach in Sri Lanka, and it was hands down the best beach I experienced in the country. The beach boasts soft golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and stunning views. The atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed, with plenty of beachside restaurants and bars serving up delicious food and drinks. I particularly enjoyed watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean, which was truly magical. The beach also offers plenty of activities, such as surfing and whale watching. Overall, I would rate my experience at Mirissa Beach as 5 stars, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful, peaceful, and enjoyable beach experience in Sri Lanka.

Very popular beach for surfers. Come here for surfing, swimming with family, really nice beach with clear water and thick white sand. Water is clean and safe for swimming with kids. Didn’t see any water sports on Mirissa beach but it’s alright because most people come here for surfing.

Mirissa beach is one of the most serene beaches in south Srilanka. Our driver took us to a lovely spot with a small island and very little crowd. The beach offered a picturesque location to take pictures and enjoy a very clean beach. Must visit location.

Rajiv K — Google review

Nice beach, good for walks and swimming but a bit crowded in the end in February. The smaller beach between turtle beach and Mirissa main beach is more quiet and there is a natural reef which enables swimming. Vast variety of restaurants and cafeterias. Please DO NOT TOUCH THE TURTLES!!!

Eeva S — Google review

The most beautiful beach! Also so good for swimming and surfing! It was clean and the atmosphere was fantastic. We truly loved it. We saw the most amazing sunset from there too, so do not leave until it gets dark because it's worth it. Plenty of bars and hammocks and options too for everyone around. Funny enough there is not an specific entrance, so you have to navigate and enter by the hotels or restaurants mostly, but otherwise great

Visited this resort for lunch on the 23rd of May with a group of 12 people. We made a prior reservation, made an advance, discussed the price per person prior to reserving the lunch. When we visit the resort today, the lunch was good and we all enjoyed. We also had icecream. However, when requested the final bill, we noticed they have charged us double the agreed price. There was 1 child who is 4years and was fed from the mothers plate. They have charged double for this child as well. It was Rs1500 per person but the food was not worth this price. We paid seperately for the ice cream as well. When we inquired into this overcharge the lady owner said she cannot do anything as this was decided by her husband and saying he is out and cannot be contacted. They simply refused to lower the charge or change the bill. This is a horrible place and the managment is bad. We do not reccomend this place to anyone. Please do not go as you will be ripped off.

KFR is the ideal choice if you're looking for reasonably priced lodging for a large group. Situated at the boundary of Kanneliya forest resort, the resort is right next to the river where you can have a refreshing bath. They have a small flat area by the river where you can sit and relax. Some rooms are built like regular houses while one room (cottage) bears a rustic vibe with clay lined walls. I stayed here but it wasn't to my liking much. The bathrooms are clean and satisfactorily equipped with hot water and other essentials.Their food is undoubtedly great. They even put together a superb barbeque at a small fee. The dining area is quite large and I was told weddings are held there. Everybody working here is very cooperative. We travelled during a rainy weekend, and there were a few leechers. So keep an eye out.

The hotel is located at the border of the Kanneliya Forest Reserve. It's about 500 meters from the Reserve which is very convenient. The garden of the hotel has been landscaped beautifully. The hotel decor is a bit dated and I wouldn't call it 4 star. However, it was very pleasant. The location was so absolutely serene and peaceful. From most of the rooms, you could see the stream that runs by it, and you could hear the sound of the water. The rooms were basic. No A/C only fans but the climate was cool enough that we didn't need a/c. Each room had a little rustic balcony and you could sit there and admire the flora and fauna and listen to the warer. Fabulous! The bathrooms were clean as well and had hot water. We had to ask for some things like soap and top sheets for the beds. It was provided immediately. The food was absolutely amazing. We were there for 2 nights 3 days. They had a mix of western and local Both were delicious. You could also give your food preferences, which we did. Their tea was amazing as well probably due to the use of spring water. The staff was very helpful and obliging. The best was the stream! It was shallow, clear and clean. There was a path to go down directly to the stream from the rooms. The part of the stream directly accessible by the upper level rooms had areas of rocks that served as a natural jacuzzi! We were there for hours. It's a lovely place to relax and unwind.

It’s a remarkable place, full of tea loving spirit. Had a Tea Ceremony with 7 flavours, walked through garden with cinnamon, tea bushes, clove tree, growing ananas, turmeric, dragon fruit and so much more. After, went to the plant itself to see how the oxidation happens and 20 mins drying process. Finally I was lucky to see the factory owner and spend with him 15 mins, talking all through, like we were old friends. I felt part of family here as Tea Ceremony as was done by Mother, guide was a son and and factory owner — a father. What an amazing experience.

Yaroslav K — Google review

We went there mainly to see the plants and buy some tea. We were greeted by a free mango ice-tea and then a kind local man speaking english took us on a tour. We’ve been on a tour in the garden where we saw various herbs (aloe vera, cinnamon, clove, tumeric…) He even knew the names of every plant in Slovak language, which was really impressive! We saw monkeys and some spiders as well. After the garden & factory (it was sunday so it was closed but we could still go inside) tour we did a tea tasting and tea shopping. Ticket per person was 3000rps, but you could buy tea in that amount instead of paying for a ticket. We had a lunch there afterwards (770rps for large chicken fried rice - more than enough for 2 people). We even got a free ice-cream.PS: If you expect a big tea plantation - this is not a place. It is a nice garden with lot of herbs.

I enjoy the family spirit of this Old, reputable tea factory. THIS IS THE ONLY FACTORY WHERE I got to taste more than 10 different kind of teas and in depth explanation about growing and processing. I even tried a very strong tea that you can drink like a capuccino. They have a wooden cottage on site and I recommend to stay to see the all process of tea production. I visited on the way from Adam peak to Galle. Perfect location.

Great restaurant to dine in or take out. Very good food for a reasonable price. I’d recommend the rice and curry and the mixed fried rice. They also have tea which we bought. You can also do tea tasting before you buy and every tea flavour they had were so good. The breathtaking view from this iconic location further enhances the visit, making it a must-see destination. Dondra Head's lighthouse not only stands as a testament to history but also offers a memorable and awe-inspiring vista of the southern seascape.

Point Dondra Head, located in the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, is a captivating destination known for its scenic beauty, historical significance, and a beautiful beach that lies adjacent to the iconic tower. Standing proudly as the country's southernmost point, this headland offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. However, it's important to note that the lighthouse's top light has been removed, which can be disappointing for some visitors.Visitors to Point Dondra Head are treated to a mesmerizing sight as the mighty waves crash against the rugged cliffs. The area's pristine beach, with its golden sands and clear blue waters, provides a perfect spot for a refreshing swim or a leisurely sunbathing session. The beach offers a tranquil escape and is an ideal place to unwind and soak up the sun.Aside from its natural splendor, Point Dondra Head holds cultural significance too. It is home to the historic Dondra Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya, a revered Hindu temple. The temple attracts devotees from far and wide, especially during religious festivals, adding a spiritual touch to the area's allure. While the removal of the top light from the tower may diminish its visual impact, the overall beauty of Point Dondra Head and its surroundings remain intact. The rugged coastline, stunning sunsets, and the opportunity to spot marine life, such as dolphins and whales, continue to captivate visitors. For those seeking a combination of natural wonders and cultural exploration, a visit to Point Dondra Head and its beach is a must. Whether you want to witness the power of the ocean, immerse yourself in cultural heritage, or simply enjoy a peaceful day by the beach, this coastal gem promises a memorable experience.-copied-

South most point of Sri Lanka. There's a mark of south most point(a postbox), lighthouse, and a benchmark stone that used to measure the sea level. Photogenic area.Small parking available. There is no need to buy tickets.Need to get prior approval to enter into the lighthouse.

I had high hopes for my visit to Dondra Lighthouse, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, but unfortunately, my experience fell short of expectations. While the location itself is classy and holds great historical significance, my visit was marred by several hiccups.Firstly, despite SLPA and Google reviews indicating that the lighthouse opens at 7am, upon arrival at 8am, we found the gate still locked. After a wait of around 20-30 minutes and numerous calls to SLPA, the supposed control body of the lighthouse, we were met with confusion and a lack of clarity regarding opening times and entry procedures.Furthermore, although we obtained permission to enter the premises through fax and multiple phone calls, there was no one present to check our permission letters upon arrival at Dondra. This resulted in unnecessary delays and frustration. Moreover, the maintenance of the lighthouse was disappointing. As an iconic landmark, one would expect better upkeep, but the grounds were unkempt with dry grass and even the letterbox appeared to be on the verge of collapse. It was disheartening to see such a historic site being neglected in terms of maintenance. While I appreciate that the lighthouse was recently painted, more attention needs to be given to overall upkeep for the greater good.In summary, my visit to Dondra Lighthouse was marred by inaccurate opening times, ineffective communication regarding entry procedures, and poor maintenance standards. As a local, it's disheartening to witness such neglect of our cultural heritage sites.

This is the last land mark of srilanka. There is huge light house. This is largest light house in srilanka with 160m. Also this place is sorrounded by beautiful beach. Also photographers will like this place.

Located at the southern tip of Sri Lanka, it is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka as well as in South Asia. It was built in the year 1890 during the British rule. 49 meters high. Some say that the light can be seen here as far as 100 km. It is located in a very beautiful coastal environment. Therefore, tourists from home and abroad come to see this in abundance. The tower is white with yellow windows. Everyone who goes here should keep the surrounding environment clean. As this is controlled by the Navy, permission should be obtained to fly drones around.

Chamindu R — Google review

The tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, located at the southern most point (Point Dendro) of the country. No visitor can enter the lighthouse tower and there's no information available as to the reasons. Presence of Navy could be seen. There are no facilities for visitors apart from a unsecured public parking and toilets. No tickets are required to enter the premises. The fundamentals benchmark to establish the height above mean sea level is located within the premises. There was an old postbox with the demarcation that it's the southern most point. But it's was gone (may be being repaired/replaced) when we visited! The whole premises is a classic example of ineffecincy in government management of these places of public interest and tourist attraction. Better parking (charged), charging for entrance, a restaurant, souvenir sales center and a guided tour with entrance to tower (charged), etc would result in satisfactory visitor experience and revenue to authorities.

It is the southern tip of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by beautiful beache and surroundings. A lighthouse that is slightly taller than other lighthouses. Located just off the main road. This place can be reached within a few minutes from Dewandara Temple. There is no ticket for entry and parking is available. A special permit must be obtained to visit the lighthouse.

WOW WHAT A FIND! We had seen this place on Instagram and TikTok before we came to Sri Lanka so we saved it on our Google maps. We decided to visit here on the way to Udawalawe from Mirissa. When we arrived there was barely anyone here so really felt like a little escape. The lighthouse looks like it had been freshly painted which made it look even more pretty. Sending the drone up we could really see the full scale of the beauty this place holds. Highly recommend visiting here if you are passing by, it’s very easy to find and get to!

🇱🇰 According to the geological data of Sri Lanka, this place is named "Dewundara Thuduwa" (the Southern Point of Sri Lanka).🚙 The access road is in good condition. But heavy vehicles or big buses cannot reach the destination parking lot.🌊 It has a beautiful beach with many beautiful rocks.Only one part of the beach is suitable for swimming.⚓️ There is a large working lighthouse at this place. If you want to go up there and look around, you need to get special permission from the Galle Port Authority and Naval Southern Headquarters.

Perched on the southernmost tip of the Sri Lankan coast is Dondra. This small seaside town is all about relaxation and is the perfect place to grab a few days of beach time. The mirror-smooth ocean at Polhena beach is unbeatable for sea-bathing when you’re not basking on the clean, white sand. For travellers interested in learning more about Sri Lanka’s history and religion, there are also several sites of cultural interest in the area. From the iconic lighthouse to the awe-inspiring temples in nearby Matara, Dondra has plenty to keep you entertained for a few days.

Visiting this place was one of my best decision. If you are going the gates to Light House open around 9/10 a.m and close around 6 p.m. (No tickets. You don't need tickets to enter the place)The surrounding areas have plenty of places to sit and chill. I personally like the backside beach which I used to sit and enjoy. If you are not good at swimming but still love to feel like a baywatch kinda person I guess this place will give you that chance. My reconsidering time to be here either early morning or evening. Because afternoon is too hot.

An absolutely brilliant day, and highly recommended. Our focus was on native (especially endemic) birds and our efforts were well rewarded. Achi is very knowledgeable covering biological and geographical interests. And the views from the steeply ascending roadway are spectacular! He efficiently arranged a combination of vehicles and drivers to get us from Galle and back.

Tregoning A — Google review

I recently had the pleasure of taking a rainforest tour with Achi. He is very knowledgeable about the rainforest and provided interesting information about various plant and animal species. He was tirelessly looking for wildlife to ensure I would have the best experience, and provided the gear required to avoid leeches. Because I was travelling solo, we also got to know each other more personally and had a great full day together.Achi also went beyond his tour guide duties and was extremely helpful in arranging an hotel room, delicious meals from a local restaurant, as well as transportation (tuk and his own motorbike), which made it easy for me navigate around Deniyaya.Overall, I highly recommend Achi as a tour guide for anyone looking to explore the rainforest. He made my trip unforgettable.

Amazing tour! Achi went above and beyond on my guided bird walk day - starting with picking me up at 530am from my hotel and ending with a dropoff nearly 12 hours later. The time in between was filled with an incredible number of bird sightings, all due to his keen eyes! He knows the forest and it's birds inside and out. He took us across several great places to see a variety of birds. He also packed my lunch and water, and made everything so easy for me! Highly recommend - I had such a good day.

Nelum and Achi were so great in organising the day for me and making sure I was happy. They organised a driver to pick me up, packed me lunch, and gave me a hot tea when I arrived back. Achi was a knowledgeable guide through the forest. It was a wet afternoon and I had some challenges with an injury but I still had a fun day and Achi made sure I got down safely. Saw wild lemongrass, a pitcher plant, lizards, millipedes and birds but honestly just seeing the forest and waterfalls was lovely too.

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a pristine rainforest containing numerous unique species that can only be found within its boundaries. This virgin forest also offers several paths for hiking, which visitors can use to explore the beauty of the forest in a more intimate way.

So it was reeeeally hard for us to figure out what entrances there are. So here you go following the entrances from Deniyaya side: Entrances South: Pitadeniya entrance = Deniyaya Matara District Entrance =Pallegama Entrance via Medaripitiya bus station (from Deniyaya) ODERKurulugala Entrance = Viharahena Samangala Entrance. Thanks to our guide we also got some very suitable trails for us: One we did was through the Kurulugala entrance in the highlands where we saw lizards, insects, spiders, monkeys and many plants. The hike was amazing although also exhausting due to the height. The second trail we did was the Pathan-Oya-Trail through the Pizadeniya entrance. This was at first really easy and we got to see loads of animals, mostly lizards, snakes, another kind of monkey and insects. Then the trail was also pretty steep and challenging but so very nice and fun. We even got to clim the waterfall at the top which was so much fun. When goind back we were going for a swim at another waterfall. So just awesome.

This forest reserve is absolutely worth a visit. I recommend to stay at some of the smaller tourist lodges accessible from Deniyaya. Much more reasonable than on the other side. Also, you’ll most likely have the place for yourself.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Sinharaja can be accessed from Weddagala, Lankagama, Deniyaya or Rakwana sides. Sinharaja is the home for a majority of Sri Lanka's endemic species of animals. From Lankagama entrance, you can visit about 5-6 waterfalls by taking a small hike which lasts for about 3 hours. There are even safe spots to have a bath during the trail. From Pitadeniya entrance, you can visit a few waterfalls. The pinnacle of Sinharaja Forest reserve trails, the 'Sinhagala' trail can be tried out from here as well. It takes around 4.5 hours to reach the Sinhagala point and about 2.5 hours for the journey back. From Kudawa entrance, there are two popular trails; Mulawella & Sinhagala. Mulawella trails takes around 2-3 hours, while the Sinhagala trail takes around 9-10 hours. If you are to complete the Sinhagala trail, you have to start from Kudawa Conservation Center at least by 6.30 am.All the trails are infested with leaches, hence take appropriate precautions (such as leach socks, salt/siddhalepa) if you are allergic to leeches. You must get the assistance of a guide to try out any of the trails in Sinharaja.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a forest reserve and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.[1]According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sinharaja is the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare. 50% of Sri Lankan's endemics species of animals (especially butterfly, amphibians, birds, snakes and fish species). It is home to 95% endemic birds. The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988.Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants, and 15 or so[vague] leopards. The most common larger mammal is the endemic purple-faced langur.Birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless Sri Lanka Crested Drongo and the noisy orange-billed babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka blue magpie.Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic Sri Lankan birdwing butterfly and leeches. The rainforest likely formed during the Jurassic era (from 200 million years to 145 million years ago). This forest encompasses a span of 36,000 hectares (88,960 acres/360 km²).[3] The reserve is only 21 km (13 mi) from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km (4.3 mi) from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Sinharaja forest vegetation density has been around 240,000 plants per hectare, the most dense rain forest in Asia.[4]Human activityThe reserve is well-integrated with the local population who live in some dozens of villages dotted along the border. The villages are more in number along the southern border whilst the presence of some large estates along the northern border has resulted in only a few villages there. The locals collect herbal medicine, edible fruits, nuts, mushrooms, other non-timber forest products including bees honey and a sugary sap collected from a local palm species of the genus Caryota. The sap is converted into jaggery, a local brew and vinegar. Local people walk in the forest to collect the above items when they are not busy with their other agricultural pursuits. In addition, the crystal-clear water coming from dozens of streams is the main water source for all people living around the reserve. For generations, local people trekked through the forest from south to north to make their annual pilgrimage to the Adams Peak.In 2013, UNESCO requested to halt the widening of ancient road linking Lankagama area to Deniyaya along a 1-km jungle patch inside the protected area after a complaint from The Centre for Environmental and Nature Studies of Sri Lanka. The construction recommenced on August 10, 2020 after prolonged appeals by the people living in villages to the Sri Lankan Government. A group of environmentalists carried out a big social media campaign and asked the Sri Lanka Forest Department, the President, the Ministry of Environment and the Central Environment authority to stop this but The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to go ahead with it to improve the livelihood of poor villagers of the area as it will clear only 0.006% of the total landmass of the forest.Mr. Martin Wijesinhe was one of the most significant people in Sri Lanka in connection to the Sinharaja.[5] He was the unofficial guardian of the Sinharaja. He has been the protector and caretaker of it since the 1950s till his death in 2021.[6]

Sinharaja Forest Reserve, located in the southwestern region of Sri Lanka, is a magnificent tropical rainforest that offers a unique and captivating experience for nature lovers. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sinharaja is recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and ecological significance. One of the most remarkable aspects of Sinharaja is its rich flora and fauna. The forest is home to an incredible array of plant species, including rare and endemic ones. Walking through the dense vegetation, visitors can marvel at the towering trees, vibrant ferns, and a variety of colorful orchids. The forest floor is carpeted with a lush carpet of foliage, creating a mesmerizing sight. The diverse wildlife found in Sinharaja is equally awe-inspiring. Bird enthusiasts will be delighted by the presence of over 160 bird species, including the endangered Sri Lanka blue magpie and the elusive red-faced malkoha. The forest is also a sanctuary for various mammal species, such as the purple-faced langur, giant squirrel, and several species of bats.Exploring Sinharaja is a delight for nature enthusiasts, with several well-maintained trails and experienced guides available. These guided tours offer valuable insights into the forest's ecology, pointing out interesting plant species, bird calls, and even the occasional sighting of reptiles and amphibians. Moreover, Sinharaja Forest Reserve serves as an essential research site, attracting scientists and researchers from around the world. Studies conducted here contribute to our understanding of tropical rainforest ecosystems and aid in the conservation efforts of endangered species. It's important to note that Sinharaja is a protected area, and visitors are encouraged to respect and follow the guidelines to preserve its fragile ecosystem. Taking nothing but photographs and leaving nothing but footprints is a key principle to keep this pristine forest intact for future generations.

Amazing! Highlight of the trip to Sri Lanka. All the guides are trained professionals, knowledgable in the local plants, wildlife and birds. The guides have amazing eyes and tracking skills, couldn’t believe the camouflaged creatures they were able to spot so easily. There are leeches but they don’t carry diseases, just a bit gross if you get bitten. Wear long socks over long pants. Bring swimwear if you do the waterfall route from the southern entrance, swimming in the waterfall was top highlight. We did two tours1. Wathugala:A 6 hour hike from the southern entrance (Wathugala) around waterfalls with Chama from Rainforest Mount Lodge. We learned about the many birds, snakes, monkeys, lizards, insects, and plants that we saw. Note that the UNESCO village is good for bird watching but the dense forest here is good for mostly lizards and snakes. The first portion of the track is a concrete path which turns into a rougher path through the forest. A somewhat difficult hike, if you’re less able then maybe ask your guide to do a shorter hike only to the first waterfall and the UNESCO village.2. KurulugalaA bird watching tour through the southwest entrance (Kurulugala) with Ramesh. Incredibly knowledgable in birds, he spent 4 months training in ornithology. We saw 8 endemic species in only 3 hours. Blue magpies, yellow fronted barbets, orange billed babblers, jungle fowl, Ceylon white eye, red faced malkoha, spot winged ground thrush, scimitar babbler.Getting there:We had our own tuktuk but decided to get a taxi there and back which we arranged through our hotel. Important to note that PickMe might not work from close to the park, try to book your taxi ahead of time. The drive to Deniyaya was well maintained roads. If you have your own tuktuk and are ok with winding roads you will be ok driving to Deniyaya. The road from Deniyaya to either of the entrances is really bad. Highly recommend getting a driver.Staying there:We stayed just outside the southern entrance (Wathugala) at Rainforest Mount Lodge. Highly recommend. Lots of other accommodation near there all seemed good quality.

Amazing nature. We took a local guide. Before we started with a trail he served us free snacks and tea.In the middle of the trail a heavy rain came upon us so we had to shorten a trip and miss waterfalls because of high water. However we saw them from 100 meters distance, still amazing! We were shocked with the amount of leech but nobody got bitten. We used a lot of salt on our shoes.

One of the best rainforest habitats in Sri Lanka. If you are a nature enjoyer you should visit this place if you are in Sri Lanka. For wildlife enthusiasts, this rainforest is a treasure trove, boasting a remarkable diversity of animals. Among its bird inhabitants are the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the Red-faced Malkoha, and the recently described Serendib Scops Owl, offering birdwatchers a feast for the eyes. Moreover, with over 200 species of birds, including 26 endemics found nowhere else on Earth, birdwatching here promises an unparalleled experience. In terms of mammals, highlights include the endemic, Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, and the Flame-striped Jungle Squirrel, both unique to Sri Lanka. The forest teems with small creatures like amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, and insects, transporting visitors to a world of wonder and fascination.Having personally visited this forest numerous times, I wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow nature lovers without hesitation. The Kudawa entrance welcomes visitors with a well-maintained pathway, offering various routes catering to different levels of difficulty. For wildlife enthusiasts and birders, the barrier to the research center pathway comes highly recommended. Adventure seekers can opt for the Mulawella trail, featuring a climb up a mountain, while hikers can embark on the Sinhagala trail and return.Notably, the local trackers and wildlife department staff are incredibly welcoming, further enhancing the overall experience. This rainforest promises an unforgettable journey for all who venture within its embrace.

We rented a motorbike and we went for this sinharaja forest reserve.. so easy to find on google maps. And you can not get lost. Incredible views. You can see the real nature of this place. They also have waterfalls you can visit. 8 of them I think. For entrance you have to pay. But it’s super cheap. Of course you’ll see some guides there. Offer their help. But definitely no need to take them. You can do it on your own as we did. Some of the places you can even swim. We got some rain. Big again, what I realized being in Sri Lanka that it’s never for longer then short time. We went April so in vending definitely was needed a warm jacket. Since it was. Abir chilly. But during the day when sun is out is amazing. Some days a bit more human then others… but perfect month to visit this island.

Goyambokka Beach is a serene and tropical destination, surrounded by luscious palm trees and offering basic accommodations. However, visitors should be aware that the strong waves make it unsuitable for swimming. The beach features several casual bars where patrons can enjoy lounging on sunbeds while sipping on fresh coconuts or sampling local cuisine.

One of the best beaches in the area. A lot of palm trees, a few coaches with umbrellas. The ocean however a bit wavy. A very good ambiance!

Nice beautiful place, but it's not really good for swimming, waves are too strong. There is a cafe where you can take coconut or eat something. It doesn't have any menu so is better to ask prices in advance. Host said that it would be enough to buy coconuts to use sunbed whole day, but then he changed his mind))) eventually two coconuts cost us 500rs and 1000rs more we should have given for sunbeds.Besides this there are no any infrastructure like toilets, showers, etc. It's quite wild beach.

About 14 km from Dickwela not a busy beach by the time we visited.. seems much waves and also not a good path for vehicles but resorts are there

My favorite beach in Sri Lanka that I discovered in 2001, when I lived here for four years. It has become more popular and touristy over time, but it still retains its charm and beauty with fine sand and fun waves. The best spot for swimming is outside off the wave breaks, where the water is much calmer. The big waves might not suit everyone, especially children, so supervision is required. The only potential issue is that it seems that one of the dogs has begun to nip people sometimes when it gets too excited. It is still playful and harmless. We were fine, but we noticed a few others having this problem.

It's a beautiful small beach, but little is open and free to sit and nowhere with shade. For unexperienced swimmers it might get rough as the ocean is a bit wavey. A relaxed place which is clean and soothing. Lovely sand and beautiful surrounding altogether. The beach is very beautiful with several restaurants and they would rent the chairs out free of charge if you eat there. The landscape is breath-taking.

Very nice beach with a few restaurant on the beach (even in low season) that offer free umbrellas. Sea color was not that blue, but there was a lot of waves.Beaches is more crowded and smaller than silent beach.

Super nice collective of relaxed young people. They prepare a great salad and one of their specialities is the banana chips/fries. The guys organised a fishing trip for us with a local fisherman (20k) and then prepared the fish for us. My children had a skin rash and the guys organised fresh aloe vera for us very quickly. Many thanks to you @sandaruwan and his boys! Best regards Martin and Family from Germany

Mulgirigala Raja Maha Viharaya is a revered Buddhist temple complex located amidst coconut trees in Tangalla. The complex boasts of seven cave shrines carved from rock across five different levels, housing several large reclining Buddha statues and smaller sitting and standing figures. Visitors can climb the 500 steps to reach the top for breathtaking views. However, there may be parking charges of Rs.30 and tourist fees of Rs.600 imposed before entry into the temple premises.

Must visit Buddhist temple in (Down-south) in Mulgirigala in between Beliatta and Weeraketiya, Sr Lanaka. 🇱🇰There are seven rock caves (like Dambulla Cave Temple) in the top of this beautiful temple. Inside of these cave there are amazing ancient paintings, statues and sculptures 🗿. Top of the rock can be seen nice view of around the village and can be relaxed. And also there is a stupa and huge Buddha’s statue on top of the 🪨. And there are few caves and a stupa in the ground Temple as well 🍂. There is a pond which has lotus on the top of the rock🪷.Parkings are available at the entrance of the Temple. Very quiet and clam place to visit. 🍃

Mulgirigala is a Buddhist yoga monastery dating back to the 2nd century BC. This Buddhist ashram is located on a large rock about 300 feet high. There are three main caves, and the paintings in the upper cave are of special importance. There is no such painting tradition in Sri Lanka. There are paintings of topless women dancing. A must visit place for a student of Sri Lanka's Buddhist history as well as for general travel

Absolutely amazing, well worth adding on your itinerary. There are 5 cave temples, three on higher level and two lower, 3 stupas and numerous spots to admire the view of the surrounding forest and the river. The murals in the caves are remarkable

Enterene is very very commercial like a festival fair with all sale items available. This is not suitable for old religious place as the value disappear from the first look. There were lot of low quality food sellers offering their goods under unreasonable prices in the place. May be relevant health and consumer authority officers are blind in the secen.

Beautiful monastery. Entrance costed 500 rupees. After the entrance, a guide came up to us and started giving us a tour without our consent, but we were generally interested, so we did not refuse his services. The tour cost $10.The top of the monastery offers a beautiful view of the surrounding nature, and the monastery has wonderful paintings on the ceiling of the rooms. Also, there are many monkeys and other animals in the area.

It seems like mini Dambulla, rather then mini Sigiriya. Its an ancient cave dwelling sorts, later some walls made. The rock shelters are now caves with the walls. There are 2 basix shirt brahmi inscriptions, 1 above office and 1 next to the lotus pond. 2 caves at level 1 at office and 3 caves at 2nd level. All caves have reclining Buddhas and wall paintings frescos. Climb further up to pinnacle via more stairs n rock cut stairs similar to those in the Western ghats, near Pune, in India. The view is good. The entire stairway is approx 260 stairs and overall takes about 1hr. Good to visit, if in this area.

The place is beautiful, worth visiting!I would kindly ask all the people who are going to visit, take some food with you for small puppies who are living upstairs, even some rice, some leftovers from your lunch...they will not survive without our help!!! I had 2 bags of dogs food with me ( as I always carry food to feed strays).I gave some straight away and some left with the woman who is selling stuff over there. She told me that they are trying to feed them as well, I hope so, but obviously not enough . Dogs are in a very poor condition. Let's make this world 🌎 better together! And enjoy your holiday! 😊

Einfach gleich sagen, dass man es nicht möchte.(Translated by Google)Beautiful temple with many steps. We bought flowers at the entrance and then placed them next to the reclining Buddha. This was very worth it as you then received a prayer and blessing from the monk above. But be careful, at the beginning locals will try to guide you and run with you. Just say right away that you don't want it.

Wonderful experience. Must visit place. Cannot say exactly what time the turtles arrive. But worth every minute. There is a waiting area. There is a person who will inform us when a turtle arrives. After that a guide will take us via the beach to the egg laying place. Sometimes that can be a nearly 2km via the sandy beach. Sometimes it can be very near. Depends on the turtle. For us it was very far. I got so tired walking that distance in the sand. But worth

We had an amazing night! Local people in every age are saving the Turtles, the eggs (from selling it). We saw baby turtles hatching , and two mama turtles laying eggs. Our guide knows everything about the turtles and answered all my 100 questions very properly. Please note these are animals and not come by the hour because we want to see them. We were very lucky to be able to see all these beautiful animals from baby to the mama turtles. Take your time , be patient, and respect nature just as much as the locals does. I’m very thankful for this experience.

We saw 4 turtles as well as seeing one turtle laying her eggs and covering them with her flippers. Amazing experience! They ask for a 1000 rupee donation before going down to the beach. We didn’t have to wait around as much as we expected! It was great.

Saw a green turtle laying eggs and went back to the sea, great experience!Could ask questions on turtles and the guide explained everything. Be prepared that the procedure takes very long (in our case 3,5h) and white light and flash light is prohibited, only red light is allowed.

During the presentation and the following walk to one of the turtles you learn alot. It seems they really work hard to protect the turtles in a suitable manner without disturbing them (to much).

Rich A — Google review

A native of southern sri lanka I have never seen turtles 🐢 laying eggs. This was a fist for me.Fist I was hesitant as I didn't know if I was indirectly contributing to the destruction of an already red listed and endangered wild animal. But once I went there I realised this was a community project where the locals have gathered in an effort to conserve these turtles since 1996.I was really impressed by their work and dedication. Also found out that turtles eggs had been a local delicacy which was new to me and the conservationists had to work hard to keep the eggs off humans other than the predators. The process is quite simple. You reach the conservation center by 8.30 pm. They will collect a donation which is about 1000 Rs. ( this is like a ticket. I personally wish there was a ticket rather than this)Then once the spotters give a message of incoming turtles the guides will take us down. Until the turtle has dugg the egg hole and started laying eggs we are not allowed to go near. After the egg laying has started they will let us photograph and give each a chance to get a good view. The animals are not allowed to be touched or harmed.Once they have layed the eggs we can follow them up to the shore line and photograph or vedio under the red light.I think its a very unique experience and I really enjoyed it. The process can take up to 2 to 3 hours. As some animals will keep digging the hole up to about one hour. They told us they will return the money if we do not get a siting.Definitely worth it despite all the negative reviews.I guess it might be quite crowded during the high season. But today was in the low season. So only about 15 people were there. Everyone was very co operative and everyone got a chance.A group of Germans tried to gate crash and do the egg hunt by themselves without paying the conservation center. Despite clear notice saying its prohibited to enter the breeding grounds without a guide during 7pm to 6am. Felt a bit disappointed as Germans are usually very reasonable and nature loving people.I think for a poor nation where conservation is always fake and animals are exploited I really respect and admire the effort of this collective and wish them all the best.Definitely visiting again with friends and family.

Bhanuka V — Google review

Amazing place, people there are devoted to save turtles. So much passion in what they do. We saw turtle laying eggs and baby turtle going back to the sea. Many tourist do not respect the rules and animals, which is sad to see but personel try to cope with it. Groupwas big and seemed that foundation lacks personel and funding. But they do their best they can in given situation. Worth the visit, just read the instructions how not to distract turtles and bring red light with you .

Justina A — Google review

Thank you for protecting the turtle nests and babys from predators this is very good for the animals future. But you should also protect them, even more from humans as long as the turtles are still coming..Everything else what I observed and what is Happening there durring a 14 days stay near this beach is suspicious and not professional. I hope this will change..The pictures shows arround 20 tourists following, photograf and chasing 1(!!) just born baby turtle. And this was initated and supported by the rangers. The nature friends of Rekawa..

Samu K — Google review

Animal protection is not their focus. We were around 30 people last night. The guide was not able to handle the big group alone. Many people did not stick to the guide‘s words. No distance to the turtle kept, used flash lights although forbidden etc. They just didn‘t care to disturb the turtle for the best instagram post. And the guide let them do. This is not what should be supported by the tourists. NO RECOMMENDATION

Yvy Z — Google review

I don't think the organization gets the credit it deserves and I think people rating this activity low for the price or the number of people are hypocrites. If you chose to do this activity you probably are a nature enthousiaste and if so please respect the animals. If it is well done we got to see turtles laying eggs unbothered and learnt a lot in the process. Also note that the organization protects the eggs and the money helps finance those people. Without them the survival rate of the turtles were about zero percent a few years back due to poachers. This activity is completely dependent on the respect of the people coming and I believe the business model is amazing in order to protect those sea turtles. More and more turtles come back to this beach to lay eggs and it is not a coincidence, the organization is doing a good job at protecting them.

Nicolas Z — Google review

Before 7 p.m. you can see the turtles being born. Not many people and nothing to pay. Please be careful to the baby turtles!Don't step on them!Don't touch them! They will find their way to the sea by themselves.

The tour was mind-blowing, the landscape and nature were incredible, and the quiet environment made it feel like paradise. We highly recommend!

A group of Aussie wildlife photographers experienced the Kalametiya Bird Santuary and so loved the adventure we didnt want it to ever finish..We were delighted with the huge diversity of wildlife. Our guide was happy to share his knowledge about the culture and history of the wetlands but also his expertise on the local species. The mode of transport was like being on a gondola on nature, slow and peaceful pace, allowing us to capture the best images of the wildlife..We considered this event as one of our highlights on Sri Lanka.

It was definitely the highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. We had to reach the bird sanctuary at 6am and get into a boat. The air was crisp with birds chirping all around. We got to see many birds and also witnessed our first beautiful sunrise of 2024. Definitely an exhilarating experience if you want to witness nature at its best. We took a guide but you can also choose not to, he showed us different types of birds and told us a little more about them and about the plants in that region as well.

Sherlyn G — Google review

It's a nugget! And if it's not easy to find, that's because it's not yet frequented by hordes of tourists. We saw several species of kingfisher, egrets, ibises, herons, eagles and so on, all with a very knowledgeable guide! And to top it all off, we even managed to get close to a crocodile! Extra, I recommend for those who want authentic birdwatching with a professional guide, not an amusement park.

I went with a group of 15 and we had 4 boats between us for both a morning and an afternoon/evening safari. It was incredibly tranquil and the morning light particularly was very good. We saw and heard a huge number of birds including a visiting Osprey and some wildlife, particularly a huge water monitor lounging on a tree trunk, plus dragon flies, damsel flies and butterflies! Gayan and his team were excellent and I recommend them for those wanting a different experience.

We visited the sanctuary which was booked for us by the manager of our hotel. He recommended the early morning trip and we were collected by our guide for the day by tuktuk at 6am.We spent an amazing two and a half hours on the water and saw the most fantastic array of birds. We were also treated to the sight of the water buffalo herdsman collecting his herd from the lake for milking and returning them later. Our guide also fed us some local delicacies that had been made by his mum!Our oarsman collected a bouquet of water hyacinths for my wife and made a garland from a water lily for my daughter. If you are in the area, then this is definitely one not to be missed.

The Elephant Transit Home (also known as උඩවලව ඇත් අතුරු සෙවන) in Udawalava is an animal protection organization that provides a halfway house for orphaned elephants. With support from the Born Free Foundation, the center rehabilitates these elephants before releasing them back into the wild, often in the Uda Walawe National Park.

Be ready here to not be a part of feeding action, you will be 20 meters near behind the fence. It’s pretty crowded all the time. But in general it’s a nice and positive place, they do good helpful job for elephants 🐘

Not only do you get to witness the care and rehabilitation efforts for these orphaned elephants, but you also contribute to their welfare through the entrance fee, which supports the facility's operations. If you're interested in wildlife conservation and enjoy observing animals in their natural habitat, a visit to the Elephant Transit Home could definitely be worthwhile. Just make sure to check the visiting hours and any specific guidelines before planning your trip.

This home is filled with these little cuties. They play around and you get to see them eat, feed by the caretakers. Baby elephants are so extraordinary and to see them so close is an amazing experience. 🐘🐘

Well worth a visit at feeding time. We went for the 10.30 am session and it was nice to see many locals as it was a public holiday. We chose this place because it really is a transit home (and vet sevice) with the aim being to release elephants back into the wild, sometimes in more distant national parks than nearby Uduwalawe, with tracking devices to check their movements and ensure successful integration. Also the animals are respected as wild animals, so there is no patting etc.

This is a place you should definitely visit in Sri Lanka! I really enjoyed watching the baby elephants drinking milk. They behave like babies, it's very cute how they act together. It is very hot, I would suggest taking sunscreen.

Amazing place! There is some construction work being done around and the place on its own needs some work. But you don't go to this place to admire the building. You come here to see baby elephants being fed. Baby elephants who lost their mothers. They are being looked after here with no human physical contact so they can be released into thebwild again when they are 6yo. After that they are being monitored for 2 years to make sure they cope in the nature. Here you can watch them being fed with milk from distance. There are 3 "show" times daily (10.30am, 2.30pm and 6pm).Looking after these animals is very pricey and by purchasing ticket and watching them you support this beautiful cause.

Place to look after baby elephants who have missed their mother or herd, until they are able to live by them selves. since they are being prepared for the jungle, they are having minimum human exposure and contacts. You can watch they are fed with milk from distance. Evey day that is done in a ground. There is a stage built for this. They make sure every elephant gets milk. There are 3show times per day where you can see they are fed with milk. You have to target show time to arrive unless you have to wait a long. Place have its own parking and has easy access from main road. There is nothing much to see. There is a information center but is has only poster boards. They could have done a better job. Thats the reason i give 4 star.

Baby elephants who lose their mother's love in the wild are brought here, nurtured and released into the wild. In this stall, you can watch the baby elephants being milked and how happily they spend their days. Located on the border of Udawalawa Reservoir. There is a fee to visit and there is an allotted time to watch the baby elephants being fed. Your donations to this station will be used for animal welfare. You can name it as a must visit place if you are visiting the area.

A must visit place for all lovers of elephants and wild-life. It's a transit home for displaced, injured, orphaned, etc. elephants to be rehabilitated before being released to forest. You can contribute for the expenses. A wealth of knowledge about elephants and how to protect them, can be gained by visiting the museum/information centre on-site.

Sudheera S — Google review

Ticket for foreigner is 1813 LKR , it's quite expensive. Local is 100 LKR 😁😁 (February 2023) This public feeding is done twice a day and the entrance fee goes towards the upkeep on the home. There is also an interesting little museum explaining about the cycle of elephants and the difference between Sri Lankan and African elephants

FARKHUN's L — Google review

The baby elephants, who are predominantly orphaned from the jungle, are super cute! This place is an excellent trip for elephant lovers or families. You get to see feeding time, which is really entertaining. The way the babies run up for the milk is so cute. This is a great cause worth supporting, so please consider visiting. Can get crowded, but you are able to see clearly even if it’s busy!

Carlitos W — Google review

The elephant sanctuary is easily accessible by vehicle and is a good place to visit before going on a safari. You can watch the elephants being fed from a separate viewing stand. There is also a small museum and information center about elephants on the premises. It's very suitable for children and it's fun to see the baby elephants.

Andreas K — Google review

Best place to see elephant in the wild. They seem to treat the elephants very good here compared to other elephant orphanage centers. After the feeding they let the elephants free in the wild, which is very nice to see and know. With your ticket you contribute with 100% to the feeding expenses for the elephants. We payed 5 USD/Person

Joe I — Google review

Pleasant place to visit, only there half an hour for the feeding. 1820lkr to get in for a foreign adult.Fun to watch. We sat on the left and it was the best place.

Heather E — Google review

Great experience for all age groups. They look after the little elephants really well.Easily accessible and plenty of car parking available.

Chathura S — Google review

Saw some of the reviews here on beating elephants with sticks. I feel those are exaggerated reviews because they use a stick to control elephants when feeding them. Those are not whips. And near the observation deck the authority has displayed an explanatory note on why they use sticks on baby elephants. My feeling is it's good to have a place like this to look after orphaned elephants rather than let them die stranded in the wildAs a visitor you can watch them feed elephants for about half an hour and that's the only thing you can do here. Good for kids.

Ruwindu S — Google review

I came back twice, and this says it all! It’s so heartwarming to see the little elephants running to get milk and trying to sneak back in the queue for a second round.Beautiful experience in a place that respects the elephts and doesn’t allow people to interact. They work to reintroduce them in the wild, which is what all conservation efforts should look like!Go visit, it’s well worth it! (Only 5$!)As of Jan 2024 the feeding times are 10:30am, 2:30pm, 6pm and it all lasts about 30minThe evening was way less crowded than the morning. Sunday morning was packed.Arrive 15-30min earlier.

Such a lovely experience! The tour guide was good and very interactive. The beaut of the elephants in their natural habits was just perfect .

Sofia W — Google review

Very endearing experience. The show is basically to witness feeding of baby elephants. More proximity to the elephants would be nicer, but then it may beat the whole purpose of the place.

Sandeep D — Google review

The most adorable experience! Sad to see these beautiful creatures in need of so much help. Wish them luck and Pray that they succeed in reintroducing them to a natural environment.

This place is a great tourist destination. If you come to Udawalawa area you must go to this place. Nice clean location and this elephant transit house is located near Udawala main road and Udawala lake. This wildlife protection facility withinUdawalawe National ParkinSri Lankathat was established in 1995 by the Sri LankaDepartment of Wildlife Conservation.

Elephant feeding done thrice at the Transit Home during the day here at 10:30am,2:30pm & 6pm . Tickets bought at the counters with separate queue for locals & foreigners. The feeding lasts for approximately 30-35 mins and is interesting to see baby elephants getting priority for milk feed followed by greens . Ample space at the steps for Sitting under the shade . Plenty of Cafe’s at the entrance of the facility . It was a good stopover !

Rajiv C — Google review

They take up orphaned elephants and raise them until they are old enough to survive in the wilderness on their own.Contact between humans and elephants is kept to a minimum, so the elephants don't get to used to people.Visitors cannot interact with the orphans, which is very good.

Miri F — Google review

Great attractions. Hilarious to see how baby elephant calves complain when refused to give more milk. Sad to see many orphaned and injured. Viewing platform is shaded areana of concrete stepping for seats. Bringing personal cushion will help.Toilet facilities seems new and clean. Entrance and ticket counter need improvement for user friendly operation. One Cafe on premises and few across the road.

Nature & Parks

Udawalawe National Park Safari is a vast nature reserve spanning 30,821 hectares in Sri Lanka that boasts an array of native wildlife, such as elephants and water birds. The park is home to herds of wild buffalo, sambar and spotted deer, giant squirrel, making it one of the country's finest national parks. With its lightly vegetated terrain, game-watching is made easy for visitors who want to observe the park's natural beauty.

It was the first Safari in my life. We rented a jeep for three hours, which is enough time to enjoy the views and animals. We met about 10 lone elephants and two herds of elephants. Great variety of birds. By the river we saw deer, buffaloes. It is forbidden to get out of the jeep, feed and touch the animals. There is a stop by the river to take photos.

Beautiful park, with a really various wildlife. Elephants, buffaloes, amazing birds, monkeys (be careful, they are pushy, and will stole your belongings). The elephants walking around and directly next to the cars, even less than meters away in some cases. Took the 4 hours afternoon tour, definitely enough. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see crocodiles, but they are there.

In fact, chances are that you will see many of them – babies, too!Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s smaller national parks at only 308.2 km². It is estimated that within this space over 500 elephants live. It’s simple really, a smaller space with a higher density of elephants increases your chances of seeing them!On my safari through Udawalawe National Park, we saw tons of elephants! Within minutes of entering the park, I saw a group of about 7 elephants. Then, throughout the safari, we saw many more including a mother with two babies (one was very small) as well as large male elephants crossing the road only meters from our jeep! The jeep drivers/guides all want you to tip them, so they work hard to find you as many animals as possible.

Any time of year, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will see elephants - if that's what you came for! 🐘Peacocks & Deer are in big numbers. You'd probably not bother taking pics of them after the first 30mins. 🙂Surprisingly, there's a diverse population of birds to the delight of bird watchers.Downside is; If your guide spots an elephant, chances are the other guides will too. This creates a traffic jam around the elephants. Elephants being naturally 'reserved', will walk away from your sight.Overall, it's a great place to visit during the monsoon season.

It’s a heaven for nature lovers. We were going mainly to see the elephants, and we saw a lot.On top of that - peacocks, different types of eagles and bee eaters, parrots, monkeys, crocodile, water buffalo ( didn’t even knew they exist:)), deers, pelicans, iguana… Wow, I am absolutely happy.

Kateryna L — Google review

Any time of year, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will see elephants - if that's what you came for! 🐘Peacocks & Deer are in big numbers. You'd probably not bother taking pics of them after the first 30mins. 🙂Surprisingly, there's a diverse population of birds to the delight of bird watchers.Downside is; If your guide spots an elephant, chances are the other guides will too. This creates a traffic jam around the elephants. Elephants being naturally 'reserved', will walk away from your sight.Overall, it's a great place to visit during the monsoon season.

Madunagala hot springs will be a monumental experience that you may ever have before. It is a beautiful creation of nature situated in Madunagala hermitage in the Southern province of Sri Lanka. To reach the place you have to take Pelmadulla- Nonegama road and Pass by about 66-kilo meters till you find Padanangala junction. Then turn for Padanangala-Sooriyawewa road. Finally, you have to travel about 12 km on the route to Sooriyawewa. Within few more steps from the main road, you will find the complex. The place is open from 7.00 am – 7.00 pm. In rainy seasons the hot springs shoot about 65cubic meters per second. You can see five hot springs covered with a basin or a stone tank.People believe that this water has an unbelievable power to cure skin diseases as well as eye diseases. Simultaneously the monks resided at nearby hermitages and cave temples are attempted to have baths here instead of healing skin eczemas and rheumatic injuries. Even today devotees believe that baths energize them. They strongly believe that their skin diseases or rashes can be vanished by bathing. Sir. Leonard Woolf, who was an assistant government agent has indicated that he also visited Madunagala hot springs. Somehow if you could visit the place in early in the morning you can see many varieties of birds in the sky. First, the pure hot water is collected into a large basin and mixed with cool water. Thereby mid tempered water flies into the closer basins made for visitors. Eventually, you can enjoy and smear natural hot water. A small aquarium and few cages made for a number of birds and rabbits can be seen at Madunagala hot water springs site. Being attracted by many visitors, the location is comprised with western toilets, changing rooms and small shops made for them. By the way, you can have a ‘Belimal’ tea or a ‘Ranawara’ tea from the local stalls in the area. As a matter of fact, you can buy traditional Sri Lankan rice meals like ‘heenati’, ‘Suwandel’ and ‘Kekulu’ varieties of Rice. Mudunagala Hot water springs are monitored by Southern Province Tourism Board.

World heritage site, national park. Above 2000m sea level this is a spectacular cloud forest with breath taking bio diversity. There is a ticket fee for the vehicle and individual adults. Tickets are different in price for locals and tourists. There are two main hikes. The 8-9 km wolds end loop - words end, mini worlds end - far spanning view points with great sun rises and views) , bakers fall. And the 7 km (14 km round trip) kirigalpoththa hike. Many endemic bird and plant species. Many other non endemic birds and amphibians.Large groups of Sambar dear can be seen.A strict no polythene zone. Bags are checked before they let you enter.

Bhanuka V — Google review

Very nice scenery and easy hike. Best be there between 7-10am, after that it can get cloudy. 4 stars because of the price (30$) which is a bit exagerated compared to other parks in Sri Lanka.

Horton Place is undeniably a hidden gem of Sri Lanka. It's a must-visit destination for every Sri Lankan, offering a magical forest experience and breathtaking weather. What's even more remarkable is the affordability of the ticket price, ensuring access for all. The dedicated and friendly staff's commitment to preserving this natural wonder is truly commendable. Visiting Horton Place is not just an experience; it's a journey to cherish for a lifetime.

Great experience, you should visit there at lease once in your life. It was 3-4 hours walking track, 9-10km distance. Beautiful view. Please look at my photos which I’ve taken.

Horton Plains is a breathtaking natural wonder that should be on everyone's bucket list when visiting Sri Lanka. The hike through the park offers stunning views of lush greenery, misty landscapes, and unique wildlife. The highlight, of course, is World's End, a sheer cliff with a drop that seems to go on forever, offering a view that will leave you speechless. The experience is truly unforgettable, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to connect with nature and experience the beauty of Sri Lanka.

Champika H — Google review

Its a really great place to visit with your family and friends. Beautiful nature. Cold weather. Variates of plants and birds. Its a 8 km journey where you get to see the Mini Worlds End then the Great World's End and then Baker's Fall. There are also places located for camping as well. Not just these but you get to explore some more mountain peaks as well. I suggest you to get a leaflet on the entrance which cost you about 100 Srilankan Rs. Come enjoy the nature, the journey, the atmosphere, the experience in Horton Plains.

Faisal K — Google review

Mesmerizing nature with beautiful mountains and greenery all around. This is by far one of the best national parks Sri Lanka has to offer. The rich biodiversity makes this an interesting place.Of course, it is most renowned for the world's end, mini world's end and the bakers fall all of which are must see places. It would take 3-4 hours to cover the entire loop (depends on how fast you walk).Be prepared for the cold, if you are trekking in the morning but plastics/polythene is not allowed. The best time to visit would be early morning 6-10am to both avoid the crowd and to see world's end without any obstructions from the mist. As later on (after 11-12 noon) mist would start to settle in).

Thaveesha C — Google review

Absolutely loved this place. I can see in some of the other reviews some negative points about the ticket counter, but we had a really positive experience and the exchange rate used was spot on (we checked on the way to the park to make sure). The ticket man was friendly, so a good start. As for the price? I truly don’t think it’s expensive but I guess that’s subjective. You pay the same price for two cocktails in London and only gain a headache from that! The park itself was spotlessly clean and breathtaking. I applaud the park keepers for checking bags and removing plastics (apart from water bottles - but even the labels come off!). So many different things to see on the walk/hike. Unfortunately we did not see any animals, and the view from worlds end was completely cloudy, but we did get a good view from mini worlds end. Overall a really enjoyable time and felt like we had the whole place to ourselves for the most part.

Joanna L — Google review

A world class heritage that everyone on the planet must visit and feel the spirited breath in the Horton Plains. Two main entrance, one is from Ohiya road and other entrance from Pattipola. The national park opens at 6.00am till 6.00pm. But entrance to the park limited only till 3.00pm if I'm not wrong.Three main trains; Thotupalakanda, Kirigalpoththa and World's end trails.World's end trail about 5km+ and with the speed and the time you spend as a nature lover it varies between 3 hours to 5 hours to complete the trail.Morning hours and the evening hours are the best to feel the coldness of the nature. The cloud forest will give you amazing experience.Officers doing there best to protect the nature and no polyethene allowed to the park and which is wise decision.Just as a tip, follow the left side from the world's end starting point junction which will not give you much tired for your journey.Make sure to protect the nature and do not bring any thing from Horton plains and make sure to keep only the footstep there.

The park itself is amazing! We saw lots of deer! The vegetation is beautiful and very different to the rest of Sri Lanka since it's a cloud forest! The round walk takes about 3h with stops in between. Make sure to wear good footwear! Worlds end is the best! One star less for the high price. The price is rising every week! Last week it was 11.700 Rs for 2 adults, today it was 12.280 Rs. The most magical looking place to be for nature lovers. cold climate but the sun was shining bright and day we went it was clear with no mist. the pathway to worlds end is somewhat difficult but rewarding once you reach it. There is a canteen at the entrance if you want to eat something. Snacks are allowed but cannot take plastic bottles or food wrapped in polytene. You can see plenty of little birds and SambarDeers and If you are lucky enough can get a glimpse of a leopard as well 🐆 Horton plains can be claimed to be one of the most beautiful places to visit in Sri Lanka.

Deshini A — Google review

Beautiful landscape, very peaceful and fun! There are deers but we saw all of them before entering the trek which was weird. The big setback is the entrance price. It feels way overpriced in my opinion.Sidenote, any food with plastic bags such as snacks or nylon bags is not allowed and they check the bags so be aware of that. Also the path is circular and it seems that going counter-clockwise (starting from the right side) is easier to take.Lastly, it's better to start the hike when the park opens (6 am) because at noon the place gets really hot. So start early and bring a light jacket for the first hour or so.

This pristine plateau, standing at an elevation of around 2,100 meters above sea level, is renowned for its unique landscape, abundant biodiversity, and stunning natural features. One of the most iconic and awe-inspiring attractions within Horton Plains is "World's End," a sheer precipice that drops nearly 1,200 meters, offering a vertigo-inducing view of the lush lowlands below. Trekkers and nature enthusiasts flock to this spot early in the morning to witness the mesmerizing sunrise over this sheer drop. The park's varied terrain includes rolling grasslands, cloud forests, and crystal-clear streams, providing a habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna. Great walk. However, trip to parking somewhat burdensome, but with great views. Have to take the early bird to enjoy World End‘s views. From 12, high risk for tropical rain/thunder storms.

Klaus H — Google review

Well maintained national park for trekking and seeing the beauty of nature. No plastics allowed to take in side the park. Approx 3 hours journey to reach both Worlds end and Bakers falls.

Chamil S — Google review

Most people come here to see Worlds End and Bakers Falls. It is a scenic location but as others comment at $36 (you must pay in cash), it's an expensive and busy 3hr hike. If you come at dawn (6am) as recommended to get clear views, you could also hike to Kirigalpotta, Sri Lanka's 2nd highest mountain which will be much quieter... We didn't do it as we arrived later and you have to start this path before 11am! But you need to agree it with your taxi in as they need to wait while you are in the park. Single use plastics are not allowed (other than water).

Kathryn R — Google review

Very good place but have to walk a lot and it has 3 points to visit 1.Worlds End 2.Mimi Worlds End 3. Bakers fall all 3 places are very beautiful, the total hike may take about 4 hours, they would not let you take plastic item but if biscuits or other snacks they will provide a paper bag so you can take your food and enjoy. After all very good place to visit recommended for everyone but small children may find it difficult and it will even be hard to cary them considering it has about 6km+ and very hard paths (the hardest path is the path from mini worlds end to start) and I had a great time visiting this place and enjoying it so I recommend you guys too.😉🗻

Nice place to hike. Wonderful experience to cherish forever. Should start your hike at 6. Then you can leave with in 4 hours. Its a circle way trail. There are paths. You can choose which one to start. One is from Baker's fall, great world end, mini world end and the entrance. We visited 30 people. It's a package. We paid 7310/= as the entrance ticket.

Horton Plains National Park sits in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, just 32 kilometers away from Nuwara Eliya. Getting there is a treat in itself, as you can take the Boralanda-Ohiya road, known as one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful routes, or the Nuwara Eliya-Ambewela road. When you arrive, you’ll need to buy a ticket at the counter. It costs 400 rupees for a vehicle and 150 rupees for a local adult, including VAT.The park’s main attractions include Mini World’s End, Great World’s End, and Baker’s Waterfall. To see them, you’ll have to hike along a 9-kilometer trail, which takes about 3.5 to 4 hours for the average adult. If you’re with older or younger folks, it might take longer. This isn’t your usual walk in the park. The trail is steep and narrow, which can be tough if you’re not used to exercising. Plus, there’s no mobile signal, adding to the adventure. Personally, I found it challenging and maybe not worth it.Since it’s a tough journey, make sure to bring water and snacks. At the checkpoint, they’ll check your bag and take away any polythene items, giving you paper covers for your snacks. Also, they don’t allow energy drinks like Redbull or Milo.

Samuel U — Google review

Total hike take about 4hrs. Better to start early 6 am or in the evening around 4.(Hike will be difficult during day hours. You will not be allowed to take any plastic items. Plastic water bottle is allowed. If you take biscuit they will give paper bags you can remove the plastic bag put the biscuit to the paper bags.Enjoy 😉.

It was a lovely sunny day. The hike took about 4 hours, 9km. There are some difficult areas, but manageable. I recommend starting from Baker's falls side and then going to World's End.

A visually stunning experience to see all the special montane flora and fauna of sri lanka. The cool climate of around 20 degrees or less makes this the easiest place for a foreigner like myself to walk about. For anyone planning on coming you can't take items in plastic wrapping there so make sure to pack a sandwich in a paper bag before going if you want to eat something. Plastic waterbottles are fine though.

Fantastic hike in a national Park. Very easy hike that was accessible to all ages from toddlers to senior citizens with disabilities. Most of the guest were in flip-flops and had no hiking supplies

One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka, Horton Plain is a very famous tourist spot. From now on, the officers will carry out a very high level of environmental control and dispose of plastic polythene etc. very properly and without giving any space to carry them inside, therefore the environment there will be very clean and minimum pollution. Some days there are very thick fogg so be aware of the weather conditions before visiting. In this, it is possible to visit places like Baker's Falls, Little World's End, and besides, animals like elks can also be seen in abundance. Be careful not to destroy the environment when you visit this

Danal B — Google review

A great place for nature lovers. You get to see birds, Sambar deer and many other animals. If you are really lucky you could even get to see the Sri Lankan leopard as well. Best you prepare yourself with proper wear for the Walk. Do not bring any sort of plastic and it is prohibited. The best time is to come in the morning.

Horton Plains National Park in Sri Lanka is a breathtaking natural wonder that left me in awe. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, with stunning landscapes ranging from lush forests to expansive grasslands. The highlight of my visit was the iconic World's End viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mist-covered mountains.Exploring the park on foot was a memorable experience, with well-maintained trails leading to picturesque spots like Baker's Falls, where the cascading waterfalls provided a refreshing break during the hike. The park's unique ecosystem, including endemic species like the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, adds to its allure for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The cool climate and fresh mountain air made the visit even more enjoyable, and the knowledgeable guides provided valuable insights into the park's ecology and history. Although the trek can be challenging at times, the stunning scenery and opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting make it all worthwhile.Overall, Horton Plains National Park is a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka for its natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and immersive wildlife experiences. It's a perfect place for adventurers and nature lovers looking to connect with the pristine beauty of Sri Lanka's highlands.

Great hike, we started around 8am, and made it to the world end cliff by 9:30 by an easy walk, plenty of time before the clouds cover the valley which I think will happen after 10. We did the entire hike about 9 km and it took us about 4 hours.

Gabi Z — Google review

The park will open 6 AM to 4 PM everyday however the entrance gates will close after 2PM since the trial normally takes more than 3 hours you complete (12 KM). Recommended to start early as much as possible if you are planning to do the nature walk. High biodiversity were there don’t bring plastics or polytine.

The road starts from the main road which is kalupahana ohiya road. It's about 5km to the waterfall. There is also a van which provides transportation to the waterfall. The ticket costs Rs.30 for locals as of 16.04.2022. Bambaraknda is known to be the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The view is mesmerizing and the nature related with the waterfall is so beautiful. If you are walking from the main road there will be dogs that will guide u to the top. Specially a black dog. While coming down from the bambaraknda after few stairs there will be small road into the woods to the right hand side which is barely visible which will take you to the LankaElla falls which is a must visit. The journey to it is breathtaking through the woods and the view at the top is priceless.

I recently took a motorcycle trip to the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and it was an incredible experience. The ride itself was breathtaking, with winding roads through lush forests and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.Upon arriving at the waterfall, we were amazed by its size and power. The falls themselves were a sight to behold, with water crashing down from a great height and mist rising up from the pool below. The surrounding area was also beautiful, with a number of hiking trails and lookout points that offered stunning views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.Overall, this was an incredible trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure in Sri Lanka. Whether you're a seasoned motorcyclist or a beginner, this trip is sure to be a memorable experience.

The highest waterfall in Sri Lanka is "Bambarakanda Falls". It is situated in the Badulla District of the Uva Province and is renowned for its impressive height, which measures approximately 263 meters (863 feet). This waterfall is located in a picturesque, mountainous region and is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and hikers. It offers breathtaking views and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a picturesque spot to visit in Sri Lanka. I was fortunate to visit during the inter-monsoon season, which added to the beauty and majesty of the falls.

Road has repaired recently from Kalupahana side so that you can reach even by car to the location. But last 200m still not on a good condition. Parking is limited and better to avoid weekends and holidays which normally getting crowded. You can bath in the place but avoid to get closer to the waterfall.

Lilantha W — Google review

The path to the falls starts on the main road on a sharp turn with no real boards so beware as I turned once without finding it. The road is carpeted only 50% and vehicles with high ground clearance is recommended. The falls are indeed spectacular and following the road above the falls is a lovely and chilling place to take a bath. Be warned that fog descends close to one hour before sunset so make the trek down early.

The highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. You have to pay to see the waterfall. Very clean and tidy environment. when we visit there was no enough water to fall. It is changing according to weather. Place has benches to sit and see the waterfall. Relaxing 😌 . Please do not put garbage here. Place is super tidy and clean. Well maintained ❤️

This is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is about 780 feet. Located near Kalupahana junction. It is a very beautiful and attractive place. You can bath and swim. But do it very carefully. Ticket price is Rs.50 for local adults and Rs.20 for local children. We reached this place by car. So you can reach this place with any vehicle. Come and visit this place. Do not litter anywhere.

Bambarakanda Waterfall stands as the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, situated along the Kalupahana-Ohiya road. Accessible via a low ground clearance vehicle from the Kalupahana side, a four-wheel vehicle or a bike is essential when approaching from Ohiya. A brief 15-minute walk from the main road or ticket counter leads to the waterfall, and the same route provides access to Lanka Waterfall. A further two-kilometer walk from Bambarakanda Waterfall is required to reach the captivating Lanka Waterfall. The experience combines natural beauty with a touch of adventure, making it a compelling destination for enthusiasts.

The elegant Bambarakanda falls is the highest waterfall in srilanka towering over 863 ft ~ 263 m.You'll find the glimmering silver streaks of the this beauty when travelling about 6km towards ohiya on kalupahana-ohiya road. There is about 500 m hike to reach the viewing stands. The natural landscape and the rich biodiversity in the area add glamour to the waterfall. This is a must see destination if you visit Srilanka.

Bambarakanda waterfall is a must-visit destination when you visit Sri Lanka, not only because it’s the tallest waterfall in the country. The surrounding area offers many waterfalls to see, several mountain treks and 4-wheel tracks through the mountain terrains as well as mesmerizing mountain views like nowhere else in the country. The fall is situated 5kms away from the main road and you must travel upwards a narrow and winding road to meet this beauty. Though the fall is visible to the road, to get close, you need to walk along a pine forest patch to reach the base. You will find a ticket counter on the road, which is the access route to the waterfall, and you have pay at entrance ticket and some items like camping tents are not allowed to take. The path is well-maintained with stairs and it’s a quiet easy trek. After about 15 minutes, you can reach the base of the waterfall and when you do, there’s a sitting area near the waterfall where you can have the best view of the waterfall from there. You can also take a hike to the top of the waterfall through the pine forest and it will take about 1.5 hours, covering 1.6kms. The best period for such a hike in April to September, where the waterfall is not too dry as well as not harsh due to the gushing water flow. If you’re doing this hike, don’t forget to visit Lanka Ella, another magnificent waterfall situated in the jungle, close to Bambarakanda falls. It is a wonderful experience to take a bath in the cold base pool since it’s a safe place. The waterfall and the surrounding area is a great place for photography as well.

Bambarakanda Falls, nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka's hill country, is a true natural wonder that captivates visitors with its majestic beauty. As the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, it plunges dramatically from a staggering height, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of cascading water against a lush, green backdrop. Accessible via a scenic drive followed by a short hike, the journey to Bambarakanda is as delightful as the destination itself. Once there, you can feel the spray of the falls and marvel at the sheer force of nature. Bundala National Park is a protected area renowned for its vast network of water bodies, including lagoons and marshes. Flamingos and other migratory water birds flock to this sanctuary, which has been declared a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The park's diverse ecosystem supports an array of wildlife, from tiny bee-eaters to larger mammals like elephants.

So many beautiful elephants and what an experience it is.. we did it at sunset and loved the light and the experience, you see birds, Buffalo and so much more... it should be around 30 usd per person if you share a jeep.

It's one of the reputed hotspots for bird watching in Sri Lanka where a larger number of local and migrant birds can be observed.Located in the South East coast of Sri Lanka this National park is sharing its east border with Yala National Park and provides shelter for large Mammals(elephants, wild bears), Amphibians and Reptiles. In the outskirts of the park few Hotels with basic facilities are there but a foriegn tourist can easily reside at Tissamaharama which is a more convenient tourist destination and reach this park in 20 minutes.

Amazing place to spot a variety of native and migratory birds. That one day I visited it rained in Hambantota but I managed to spot many birds. I recommend you book a safari before hand. Try Bundala safari with Srimal. He had a very good rating and he was great. He and his brother- in - law helped us spot many birds and animals. I would highly recommend Bundala safari by Srimal.

A world renowned wintering ground for migratory water birds, located in the low country dry zone. Popular for bird watching and wild elephants.Declared as a National Park in 1993 and a Ramsar Wetland in 1990 - the 487th in the list of global wetlands under the International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention - named after the Iranian city of Ramsar, where the convention was signed in 1971). The Park was designated as a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the fourth in Sri Lanka. There are open campsites operated by Department of Wildlife and a holiday bungalow owned by Lanka Salt Ltd. Park visits are allowed in safari jeeps or own vehicles, a guide will accompany you either way. The parks opens at 6am and it will take at least a half a day to roam around. There are helpful and knowledgeable wildlife officers at the information center who will provide all the details you need to know about the park and wildlife in general. 'Madhura' the officer who spoke with us was exceptional.Highly recommended to visit at least the information center if you don't have a time to surf through the park.

Every single time I travel, I fall in love with my Sri Lanka a bit more. Close to Yala, sharing the southern coastline, Bundala is a beautiful national park with fewer animals and safari jeeps. Still, definitely worth the travel for the landscape it offers. Very much like the Yala Block 5 in that it is quiet, creepy and utterly serene. We spotted many many birds, crocodiles, foxes, elephants, butterflies, rabbits, peacocks, monkeys, etc. I love that there is less traffic and noise here. Lots of water bodies. The coast is gorgeous.

This park is 1 km away from my house and it is very beautiful. The sun is very hot between April and September. Many tourist birds can see many animals that have never been seen before. If you come in December, you can see many birds. There are three or four elephants on the side of the road in the evening, so don't disturb them. Don't litter the other park.

Lovely park with amazing bird watching and diverse animals. It's uncrowded and serene especially in the mornings. I thoroughly enjoy our tour, but was a little disappointed that nobody communicated upfront that all elephants have left the park for other areas. Wonderful Rock Carving with Buddha Statue, Future Buddha Statue and Deities. Masterpiece of massive stone carving in ancient Sri Lanka. I visit Buduruwagala two weeks before

Guideme S — Google review

In Sri Lanka, there is an old Buddhist temple called Buduruwagala. The complex is made up of seven statues that are associated with the Mahayana philosophy. The sculptures are from the tenth century. The massive Buddha statue was formerly vividly painted, as shown by the lengthy orange streak that remains from its original stuccoed garment. It is believed that the central figure among the three to the Buddha's right is the Buddhist mythological character, Avalokitesvara, or the Bodhisattva.

I'm a bit familiar with ancient places on Sri Lanka and this is a few leagues lower than staples like Sigiria or Anuradhapura.Still worth to visit if you have free slots on your journey.Sri Lanka natural beauty is amazing. So in my and my partner opinion the natural ponds on the way and the rice fields were a highlight of the trip. There is an abundance of wildlife in the Archeological Reserve. We saw peacocks, hornbills, herons and a heap of other small birds. We even saw first time in Sri Lanka a snake crossing the road.

A Nice and amazing historical place to visit. I don't now the story behind this amazing carved statue but the place itself is really beautiful. The place is quiet and you can also relax on a rock with a little pool of water. Out of respect, the woman have to cover their shoulders with a shawl if the shoulder is naked. Also if you want to visit the statue from a close distance you have to remove your shoes. Also out of respect. If you look very closely you see on one of the right statues has 6 fingers instead of 5.I am a tourist driver and I often take tourists to visit the place and guide the tourists

About 20-30m tall and carved into a cliff, this is an impressive site to anyone and a holy site to Buddhists. You will need to wear pants or cover your knees and remove shoes and hats when entering the immediate vicinity of the carvings. Also takes you right past a huge lake on the way with various wildlife to observe.

A must visit place for all nature and history lovers. There are several Buddhist statues engraved on the rock (which also is the meaning of the name of place). The access road and surrounding is beautiful. The walk towards the rock is through a nice tree cover and a little forest. Be mindful of the monkeys. We met a local guide who was well aware of the history and is providing the historical background and the importance of the place to all visitors (specially the children). These creations belong to the Mahayana chapter of Buddhism and apparently were painted originally. Some statues seem unfinished. But well worth a visit due to the aritistic and ancient value as well as the natural beauty of the location.

Very Good safari in Yala park. Our driver/guide drives safely. We were some of the first jeep to enter in the park at the opening. He has a lot of experience and he knows well about the animals and the park. We were Lucky to see 2 leopards and 2 cubs. I definitely recommend the morning tour with Shehan Tours.

The safari tour was quite nice, we saw a lot of wildlife, including a leopard right at the end of the day when the closing time of the park was near. The driver was friendly, but unfortunately he didn't give details about the animals we were seeing. I did appreciate him that he was in search of spots to see a leopard until the last possible minute of staying in the park. He also drove quite dangerously inside and outside the park, I have to admit that I was happy to exit the vehicle alive at the end of the trip. The process to book the trip was quite easy.

We booked them by phone for an afternoon safari. We were picked up at 2 by Yashara and instantly we knew it was gonna be an amazing safari. Highly recommend this team for your Yala Safari.

The best tour guide in Sri Lanka! Sasanka was the most amazing tour guide / jeep driver for our day around Yala. I can't believe how good he was at spotting animals, some were far and some were camouflaged and he still managed to point them out. He was amazing at spotting animals, had so much knowledge to share about each one and we were luckily enough to see leopards along with lots of other animals including elephants and many more!! Highly recommended the tour with Shehan Safaris!

We had a wonderful full day safari with our guide Tikiri. We saw a sloth bear cub, a leopard (far away in a tree), a lot of elephants, crocodiles, buffalos and many birds. Our guide did his best for us to see as many animals as possible. The lunch is at the beach. The building is ugly, but you can take your plate and enjoy the food on the beach.Keep in mind:• lunch break is 2 hours long, so except for chilling on the beach you can’t do anything else• there are no toilets in Yala (except for at the lunch spot), so you’ll have to go into the bushes

Nico — Google review

Ive booked a custom tour in advance - pick up in Tissamaharama, Yala in the morning, Udawalawe in the afternoon and drop off in Mirissa - and confirmed the date via mail again 3 days prior. When there was no jeep waiting for us at 5am, another guide called the company and they would have forgotten about us if he had not done that. So the organization / office part definitely would not have gotten 5 stars, however both our guides were amazing:Yashara went with us to Yala and even though we ended up being rather late (due to them forgetting about us), he had a friend (?) saving us a spot so we could skip a lotttt of the line to Yala. He also seemed really knowledgeable about the leopards and interested in them himself - we ended up seeing them twice - once really close - and both times pretty much had the best spot out of all the cars there 🤩We didnt see sloth bears but pretty much everything else - elephants, buffalos, a snake, a crocodile etc. I personally would have wanted him to stop a few times for other animals like real close buffalos, but his focus was definitely one the leopards. Again - as we did get to see them twice and really close that was perfectly fine, but if we had not ended up seeing them it might have been a bit disappointing. Either way, he for sure is a great guide!Personally, I feel like it might make sense to combine different tours so that the cars are full - there tons of jeeps with only 2 or even just 1 person on them - so that the line in the morning would be shorter, it would be less hectic for the animals and probably more people would get to see the animals (the drivers do talk to each other, but obviously not all 100 jeeps can end up at the same perfect spot). Of course, that has nothing to do with Shehan Safari specifically though.Around noon, we got picked up by Sosanka who took us to lunch and then to Udawalawe and organized the car to Mirissa after that. First of all, the lunch was amazing and ended up being my boyfriends favorite curry of our 3 weeks in Sri Lanka.Sosanka also does tours through Yala and told us he even found leopards babies a few days ago which is super rare, so I am sure that he also must be an amazing guide for Yala.He was all around really nice and told us a lot about the animals that we saw in Udawalawe, which I really liked (and which Yashara didnt do).In hindsight, my boyfriend and I would have rather done a whole day in Yala instead of Udawalawe - Udawalawe for sure is way less crowded and hectic and you get to see a lot of elephants really close and also some buffalos, but Yala was more exciting for us (maybe we just had luck though).Either way, we can 100% recommend both of our amazing guides - just make sure that the company actually remembers to pick you up :D

The safari was incredible, made especially good by our jeep driver, Pradeep, he was so knowledgeable and was so determined to find a leopard for us, which we did! He was hidden away in the bushes but we still saw him. As well as a elephant, who came up so close to our jeep, you could see how happy Pradeep was for us, he really did make our experience special. The national park itself is beautiful and wild, amazing to see the animals in their natural habitat. Thanks Pradeep, see you again.

Fantastic afternoon safari in Yala National Park. We were picked up on time by our friendly driver who spoke great English and driven to the park entrance. He was knowledgable with all wildlife and was happy to answer questions throughout. Binoculars were provided which was a nice touch! Something to note, we booked our trip on a full moon day celebration which meant driving to the park took much longer than expected due to local traffic. We probably lost nearly an hour on the drive alone so it would have been great for Shehan to take this into consideration (more so for future guests) and offer an earlier collection time. Overall, a brilliant day and money well spent!

We had an amazing day doing the full day safari with Yashara in Yala. He went above and beyond to find leopards for us and our jeep got an amazing close up view of a few walking around. We also saw loads of other animals like elephants, spotted deer, wild boars, water buffalos. Yashara knew a lot about the local wildlife, could name them all and would tell us about the different animal’s behaviour. Absolutely incredible experience, would highly recommend!

Our tour with Shehan Safari was fabulous! We had Sasanka as our guide and he really went above and beyond to make sure we saw as many animals as possible (including a leopard!!) and that we had a great time. Our tour also included handy transfers from Ella to Hiriketiya which were prompt and so helpful!

Gabby P — Google review

Our guide (Tikiri) was fantastic. He went above and beyond to make sure we saw as many animals we could. He was very knowledgeable. He deserves a lot of credit for adhering to the park regulations.

Bodies of Water

Artificial lake thought to date from the 3rd century B.C., popular for boat safaris & birdwatching.

Tissa Wewa is a reservoir in Tissamaharama, thought to have been constructed in the 3rd Century BC, either by Mahanaga of Ruhuna or his successor Yatala Tissa of Ruhuna, in order to irrigate paddy lands and supply water to the flourishing city of Tissamaharama.

Such a beautiful view is having for the lake. There is a walking path around lake gives a wonderful place for a morning workout. There is a canal enough to take a bath as well. It is risky having bath from the lake. Specifically when it is full of water.

Nishadi J — Google review

Beautiful breathtaking place. Boat riding available.

Hasantha K — Google review

Very beautiful placeCan have bathBoat ride around lake an island

Sanath K — Google review

Probably the main reason or the biggest reason for you stopping by, if you consider doing that, will be to see a lot of bats sleeping on the trees at the lake and flying away as the sunset comes. Ask locals about the exact time when they go for that so you don't miss an opportunity to see something interesting that you don't often have a chance to see.

Jana K — Google review

Very beautiful ancient lake.

Romein N — Google review

Ancient fresh water reservoir built back in back in 3rd century BC still provides water for vast paddy fields in Sri Lanka. If you happen to visit Thissamaharama or Kataragama this is a must do list view specially at sunrise or dusk in late evening.By the side of the main road built over its dam is a walking/jogging path which is wonderful place to have a relaxing evening walk.

Ganindu M — Google review

Entirely man-made but absolutely beautiful, especially when it is a bright gayful day full of activities. Boating, ice cream selling, and a local cafe in the lake view hotel that overlooked the lake. Absolutely spirit lifting just be being here.

Rebecca C — Google review

Very beautiful and calm place to visit,Lots of birds to see, a boat service is near by , so it is possible to rent one and travel around the lake.

Kolitha K — Google review

One of popular view point among the those who coming to warship Ancient city of Kataragama. You may find few Bathing point which you can take a bath safely. It's not recommend to enter to this water body from unsafe location. Also you may find few people will come and trying to take you on boat ride.First of fall negotiate about the payment and get in to the boat.Otherwise they will ask you to pay huge amount of money which not worth of boat ride.

Prasanga P — Google review

Ancient lake by the side of the road. Follow the Google map and you'll be fine. can go for a boat ride too. Can enjoy the view and there is another way to the dam and a ground where you can even have meals. Unfortunately locals have polluted the surroundings. So remember not to leave anything there.

Beautiful lake in Thissamaharamaya

Amith R — Google review

This is an iconic place in thissamahara. Beautiful place with greenery. Now, it developed with a walking path. Have some boat rides. Not suitable for bathing. Ideal place to stay near the lake and have a meal. But do not put garabage and destroy the environment. Sometimes you have to pay a parking fee.

Ravindra I — Google review

Boat ride with bird watching was the highlight of your stay. This is probably the most underrated place here and our experience was much better than even yala safari. We took a boat ride(7000 for 6 people) and got to see thousands of birds with different species super upclose. This is a must visit place and not to be missed.

At Ella Rock Trailhead, visitors can enjoy various hiking options such as climbing Mini Adams Peak or Ellas Rock and exploring the tea plantation. The area also offers attractions like Ravana Ella waterfalls and the nine arch bridge. However, it is important to be cautious of local signage as it may lead one astray. A guide is recommended for a better experience. After crossing the bridge, visitors can take a dip in the river to cool off.

A nice nature trail. Fantastic view to the top of the rock. Bit of hard track to walk but really interesting.A juice stall and Rotti stall on the top of the cliff was a great help to climbers which were functioning by few villagers.

So about this hike. It is quite nice and the landscape and view is amazing. The thing is it's not so easy to find it by yourself as there are no signs and locals try to get you to choose them as guides. Also it's very steep and can be quite slippery, especially when going down. Wear good shoes!!But even when it's cloudy (like it was when we were there at 6:30) it's still beautiful. I really recommend to go there at sunrise though so you don't have any clouds. Just start really early so you are up at 5:30/06:00 latest.

Katja K — Google review

Great hike this! Super scenic and not too challenging. The hardest part is probably the last 30 minutes as it starts to get pretty steep. I highly recommend downloading a trails app to show you the routes you can take as it can become very unclear at times where you should be walking. You can find the start to this trail by walking along the track from Ella train station for about an hour or so and you will find the start on your left. You will then walk over a tiny bridge that is over a small waterfall, which then leads through a tea plantation where you will find the workers picking. Really quite beautiful!Make sure you bring enough water to last you 3/4 hours total, or bring cash as there are locals selling drinks. There is a fee at the top of 930 rupees to see the view, however we just sat around on the benches up there for around 30 minutes and the guard just let us through for free after trying your best haggle is to come in.Highly recommend this hike!!

Oliver T — Google review

If you love living green, then Ella is obviously a place to visit. Ella Rock is one of the place which proves it.Trekkers would love the place. It’s bit tiring to do the hiking. But it is definitely worth it. Once you got to the summit you will realize why we said so. The panoramic views it provides with mist and cloud covering the area, especially in the early mornings and the late evenings are something you should witness and that would suffice enough to say that you visited Ella.Total time for climbing up and down is 4 hours. Yes, sounds like a long journey. But the way up there is with full of diversity. If you are starting form Ella train station, you would enjoy the rail walk, and soon as you started climbing up, you will be passing a waterfall, the rubber tree forest and tea plantations. On a rainy day, it can be slippery, so better be cautious with what you wear for the journey. Wear something suitable for a hiking and towards the end of the hike, route will get bit harder with the steep, still manageable.Kind request for all the trekkers,Ella is popular among many people for its echo-liveliness and the calm-countryside atmosphere. So help us protect the area by being responsible on your visit. Please make sure you don’t throw all those plastic bottles, food wrappers here and there. Bring trash bags and pack out everything you bring in so it can be disposed in an appropriate place. And don’t just stop with your own trash. We all can be happy when we visit the place next time, if we can see the place looking better than when we got there.Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints - Happy Traveling!- copied...

This is what the turn-off point looks like. Accurate location but can be difficult to locate while it's still dark if you're doing the sunrise hike.

Taylor F — Google review

Download a map before you go, I also posted one on Strava. It’s easy to get lost but you really don’t need a guide to go. Entrance is not free, 900lkr.Or just follow the train tracks to the entrance and there you can follow dogs to the top :). Get some crackers to thank them and they will make sure you go up and down easily like they did for me. I had a full dog guide service until train station.

Kseniya M — Google review

Ella Rock stands out as one of Sri Lanka's top tourist destinations, especially during the early morning for a breathtaking sunrise. Be cautious of locals attempting scams by misleading you on paths or overcharging for guides. Optimal access is possible by using trains to reach near the trailhead, getting off at Kithal Ella station. Walk 300-500 meters towards Heel Oya direction, turn sharp left at the narrow bridge, proceed through the tea plantation area, and ascend easily without the need for guides. Leeches are minimal, and watch out for high prices at snack shops along the trail.

Romein N — Google review

Great hike but do not follow this map. This leads to a hotel. Easiest way is to go to the railway station and from there u can follow a trail of your choice. We got the exact information from Uva provincial council office next to Ella station. These officials were very helpful.Being said that, Ella rock trail is a must do!!! You’ll get to see one of the most breathtaking views of Ella city/uva province and the hike of 3hrs total(up and down) totally worth it! Take cash with you as there is a ticket to purchase to go to the view points and make sure you do go to the second view point as well.. which is the most amazing view of both and lil dangerous 😁

Dilakshi W — Google review

This is the start but take local signage with pinch salt as it gets you lost, which is supposed to, so you need to pay for local guide, who soon pick up on you. After the bridge If your walking across an open padi field you've gone wrong, go back and take the left fork past several any hills up a clearly walked path. When you come back over the bridge take a dip in the river

Don D — Google review

The full experience is when you get to the trailhead by train track( from Ella train station)And also don't forget there are 2 viewpoints on top of the hill ( the one further is much nicer)

Dar — Google review

I give it one star because after doing the whole excursion, they make you pay an entrance fee to do only 40 metres and see the view. It would be understandable if the path was well signposted and well maintained but this is not the case. It seems ridiculous to me that they make you pay just to see the view at the end. It really isn't worth paying the entrance fee. The path can be easily followed with a geolocation app, I used Wikilok, and it is not necessary to hire a guide.

Antoni G — Google review

This is a great sign to turn left towards the trail leading up, i would recommend using a flashlight during the night and search for the turn, you know you got it right when you go over a bridge over a waterfall. When passing the bridge i recommend using the trail on the left going up towards the fields and not turn right towards the jungle.Use some apps for trails that can help a lot!

Ofek S — Google review

One of the best things to do in Ella.Views are best at the sunrise. Can be managed without a guide.30-40 min hike to the top and better to go prepared. If you go by train from Kandy, get off at kithal ella station and it is not uneasy to find the way from there.there are little snack shops on the way to the top as well.Should not be missed if you are travelling to Ella and ready to experience a bit of hiking.

Dulana M — Google review

A must-walk trail. Diverse views and surroundings. Walking on railway, seeing tea plantations, rice fields, waterfall and finally breathtaking views on valley, hills, village and Rawana waterfall is absolute essence of this area.Tips. Download a OSM map based app and follow directions to Ella rock. Google maps won’t be helpful (sorry Google!) and will get you lost cause trail in lower parts goes through rice fields and tea plantations. And ways to reach final climb are plenty.Reaching the Ella Rock is 3-part journey. First, starting from Ella you must walk along railway, then find your path though village with little help of locals, then reach the final climb and you’re done. ☑️Reaching the top. Ella rock view is good but don’t finish there because on south part of mountain there another second view point- even better in my opinion.Don’t bother if you forget something to eat or drink - local booths on the way won’t leave you hungry or thirsty.

Łukasz K — Google review

This trail is just an absolute gem while staying in Ella. It's a must for all hikers/nature lovers who do enjoy hiking. I'd classify it moderate to challenging trail and definitely not suitable for beginners. It starts off easy while walking on the train tracks from Ella town. Takes you through the tea plantations which are absolutely gorgeous until you start some light ascending through the forest. The most challenging and difficult part is the last push through the forest to the summit as it's very gravely with water flowing down through the narrow path where you definitely need to use a lot of balancing, good footwork and scrambling. It's also quite steep so better watch out for your knees.Sports shoes/trainers are totally ok!Just to know, at the top, there's a charge of 900LKR per person (foreigners) to go further to see the view and more walking to the other part of the forest.Best time to set off is super early so you can catch the sunrise on the top.Overall, it took us around 5hrs with breaks on the top.

Simona S — Google review

Very cool short hike (but not super easy, steep can get slippery also)Great viewMove to second view point after sunrise it’s not as crowded and also beautiful

Dani M — Google review

A really great place to watch the sunrise. The hike is a little bit hard but shouldn't take more than 1 hour. We used the Google map to find the route for walking from Ella to the trailhead, but the thing is that you can take a shortcut by walking beside the train track from Ella to kitalElla.

SsajadHH — Google review

Simple hike with amazing views! I took off one star for 2 reasons:1) there is a 921 Rs ticket charge for the final viewpoint, which is ridiculous and absolutely not worth it, as the best views are on the trail;2) some locals near the blue house right after the rail track bridge purportedly lead people on the wrong path to scam them into hiring a guide. You do NOT need a guide to do that hike, it is a very simple hike and you cannot get lost!!! Just start the trail at “Ella’s Rock Trailhead” as shown on Google Map!!Google Map gives the right directions; DO NOT follow the directions given in the Lonely Planet Guide, and DO NOT listen to the locals who will lie to you and tell you that the way to Ella’s Rock starts at the blue house, right after the rail track bridge. It is a scam, they want you to hire a guide because you will have a very hard time finding the way and get lost if you try to use that route, because the path splits into numerous paths and the vegetation is so dense you cannot see where you’re going. Besides, it is a lot more dangerous as it is at the edge of the cliff, you need to climb a lot on that route, and the views are not as beautiful as on the other trail. Some people have fallen to their death on this route, with the latest fatal accident in March 2024.After the rail track bridge, go past the blue house until you reach Kithal Railway Station, then keep going straight and then take the turn on the left, where Google Map sets the trailhead, where you’ll see a river and rice paddies, then tea plantations. Then all you have to do is keep going straight the whole way (first climb up the tea plantations, then straight ahead). It absolutely does not require a guide, there is only one path and you meet other hikers going up or down every 5 minutes so you can’t get lost. That path is flat for most of the way and super easy, that’s why the locals try to send you to the hard trail instead to force you into getting a guide. Take the Google Map trail, not only it is a lot easier/safer, but the views are also nicer!

Clothilde B — Google review

Beautiful views (you can see Little Adam's peak and so on) but you have to pay 930rupis to be able to watch it. From the railway station around 2hours up and down

Joanna O — Google review

If you’re looking for a breathtaking hiking experience, I highly recommend the Ella Rock trail. This trail offers a stunning landscape, brimming with natural beauty, making it a perfect choice for nature lovers. The difficulty level is low, making it accessible for most hikers. As a tip, remember to bring cash, as there’s a fee of 900 rupees at the top.

The cooking class Ella Spice Garden Cooking Lessons was a great experience for the family. The host was very knowledgeable and explained everything in detail. They had pictures of spices that were out of season which gave us the chance to smell them. Unfortunately, the cooking class wasn't available, but we still highly recommend it!

My family and I (2 kids, 8 and 9yrs old) participated in the Ella Spice Garden Cooking Lesson and loved it. The lesson was interactive and engaging. The food and ingredients were excellent. Both my children said it was the highlight of their stay in the region! Thank you!

I have taken many cooking classes and this was definitely a favourite. Theeka provides a really fun and informative cooking experience. It was really cool to learn about all of the spices in the beautiful garden tour. The cooking class is extremely well set up, organized, visually appealing, and we made probably the best meal I had in Sri Lanka. You will leave with both a full belly & heart. Thanks again! 😊

We had an amazing experience! Very interesting, entertaining, engaging and very well organized. At first we had a tour in spice garden, then there was a cooking master class where everyone had a chance to participate and we receive very good explanations and in the end we had dinner all together with the food that we cooked.I also liked that the recipes were adapted for international audience (not very spicy)

A great cooking course, was really a lot of fun. Starting with the organization and communication, everything went smoothly. Small books with recipes were handed, many and the recipes were sent again afterwards online. Cooking the local food is a completely different experience and tastes even better. You got tips on how to do it at home. The mood during the course was very cheerful and the staff members were absolutely friendly, you even get a guided tour of their own little garden. All in one an absolute and clear recommendation!!

The best (vegan) Sri Lankan cooking class with the friendliest of hosts, Tikka. After walking through his spice garden, learning about how each is grown and harvested, we started cooking our 7 dishes. Every step was explained well, with an interactive book for note taking, as well as plenty of opportunity to get involved in the cooking process. Lots of tips were shared too (like how to easily peel garlic). The food itself was delicious. By far one of the best cooking classes I have been to. Thank you Tikka and team!

We had a brilliant evening learning authentic Sri Lankan cooking here. The main chef is amazing and clearly so passionate! And his assistants so lovely. It was so well organised and set up, but also you properly get to be involved. Every person is invited to be part of cooking something and the fact you get a full recipe book and other videos / pdf to take home is amazing! We met some lovely people too and sharing our food together at the end was perfect. Delicious and fun night!

Tucked away down a secluded driveway near Ella's center, Ella Spice Garden Cooking Lessons offers a captivating culinary adventure. Led by the talented Theeka, head chef and master storyteller, this experience begins with a fascinating exploration of Sri Lankan cuisine and its cultural significance.Gathered in a small, diverse group of twelve, we immersed ourselves in hands-on cooking, guided by Theeka and his capable assistants. Laughter filled the air as we prepared an array of dishes together, culminating in a delicious shared meal—a true testament to our newfound skills and the joy of collaborative cooking. This evening was not only informative but also infused with warmth and camaraderie, making it a standout highlight of our trip. The chef is very good in explaining and engaging participants. His English is also very good. Quality if the ingredients is high and there are many materials shared after the class to cook it at home. Actually, it was probably the best curry I had since arriving in Sei Lanka which was 7 days ago. Highly recommended.

Little Adam's Peak is a popular hiking destination in Ella, Sri Lanka. Visitors can climb to higher elevations and explore the tea plantations while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The hike up to the peak is considered easy and recommended for families with children. It takes approximately 30 minutes from the main road to reach it. Additionally, visitors can walk from Adams Peak to the Nine Arch Bridge, which takes around 40 minutes through stunning landscapes.

An easy hike in the darkness took us up 30 min before sunrise. Really recommend it as the effect of the sun reaching over the mountain was surprisingly dramatic. We went up with two children 9 years old and it was not really a problem. Took us about 30 min from the main road.

Christian R — Google review

I recently visited Little Adam's Peak and was blown away by the breathtaking views. The climb to the top was a challenge, but the views from the top made it all worth it. The mountain stands at a height of 1141 meters and offers plenty of opportunities to capture stunning pictures. I particularly enjoyed visiting the peaceful corner of the mountain where I was able to sit and enjoy the panoramic views. The wind was quite chilly, but the experience was truly exhilarating. I would recommend Little Adam's Peak to anyone looking for an adventure and beautiful scenery.

ALPHA S — Google review

As an avid hiker I can say this is just a pleasant short stroll. All paved and stairs and quite crowded. Decent view at the top. The zip lines really ruin the ambiance. I probably would just go for proper Adams peak and skip little Adams if I could do it again.

The hike to Little Adam’s Peak in Ella offers a perfect combination of breathtaking scenery and minimal effort, making it an ideal excursion for travelers of all ages and fitness levels. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush tea plantations, providing a serene backdrop as you make your way up the mountain. While there are some steps to climb along the way, they are manageable for most people and add to the adventure of the hike.As you continue along the trail, the views begin to unfold, offering glimpses of the surrounding valleys and mountains. These vistas only get better as you ascend further, with each step revealing more of the stunning landscape below.Reaching the summit of Little Adam’s Peak is a rewarding experience. The best view point in EllaLittle Adams Peak whether considering the word ‘Little’,it is named after the sacred Adams Peak (Sri Pada –where the foot print of Lord Buddha is preserved) regarding the similarity between the two mountains. Therefore the mountain was called as Little Adams Peak.“Punchi Sri Pada” is another name for this peak. It is 1141 m in height. Little Adam’s Peak attracts many travelers who come to Sri Lanka. Gradually with an easy hike up to the mountain of Little Adams Peak you can consummation a worth panoramic view. You have to walk through lush green tea plantations, waterfalls and paddy fields while enjoying the sceneries. It will be priceless if you could visit the place in the morning when the clouds roll in. Further places like Little Adams Peak deliberates ‘How far Sri Lanka is worth and rich with beautiful natural destinations of Sri Lankan tourism’. It will feel like a neck exercise for the visitors as you have to rotate your body to seek the views outstanding for 360 degrees.Ella town is a small town among the up county destinations consisted of waterfalls, caves and geographically significant places. One such place is Adams Peak, figured in Pyramid Shape Mountain which stands opposite of the Ella rock. Be aware not to harm the plants, flowers and animals that will meet on your journey up to the mountain. You could see the people who are plucking and collecting tea leaves, working in their estates. It will take around 35-45 min to reach to the top of the mountain on a zig- zag path. Thus it is an ideal place to watch sun rise in the morning. With prodigious views of as far as Ella rock and down to the gap will be gorgeous. It is a must to say that ‘don’t forget to wake up early in the morning and climb the mountain before it gets hot’ otherwise you will feel tired. Although take a bottle of water with you. If you could have a cup of tea or something you may feel better on your way back to the hotel or home.

Great viewpoint in Ella. From the starting point (Little Adam‘s Peak trailhead) you will need 15 to 20 minutes to get up. It’s mostly stairs, and the path is not very challenging. From the top, you will get a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and landscape. Recommended to go early in the morning for sunrise.

Stunning place! The walk up to the peak is very easy and manageable, and with great views all the way up. There are signs at the base to help get you started. Did the hike for sunrise and it was well worth it! Beautiful landscapes at the top and no rubbish left around! The path is very well signed (impossible to miss). The views from the top are unique and absolutely worth the climbing. One of my favourite memories in Ella!

Beautiful view! Went for sunrise and even though it was cloudy it was still stunning. Relatively easy walk to the top so all fitness levels can do this. A few places at the top to sit and take in the view. No charge, so definitely worth the visit if you are in Ella.

It consist of 3 peaks, of which the last trial is little difficult one but the best.. 10 min from ella town, Hardly 500 - 600 mtr from the parking, & 2 hours to complete the trek. There are steps leading to the first peak. Also you can see the mega zipline on the way. A must visit location for a day trip in ella.

A very simple stairs hike that takes about 15 min or so to reach the top! But the view is about the same as when you’re walking from Ella Swing to Ravana Flying Fox to up here. Unfortunately it started drizzling halfway while we were going up. Otherwise would be better. Overall an easy hike.

Lovely spot and I imagine amazing views. It did rain on us most of the time and the clouds came in but still worth the hike. It’s quite an easy walk if you’re worried about your fitness.

Temple was peaceful and is located in a huge premises. Buddhist stupa is at a distance. The strange part however was that Subramanya swamy, Ganapati and all other hindu temples did not have an idol. Instead a curtain containing the image of the god was the deity. Temple authorities said only during prayer times at 0430, 1030, 1830hrs some of the rituals take place. We visited during the start of summer but it was quite hot so do plan to take your slippers to the stand near the temple.

The jungle shrine of Kataragama located an hours drive away from Yala National Park and has great religious and historical significance that cuts across race and religion that brings together Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians each day to worship at its numerous temples of all faiths located within the sacred city. The town has Ruhunu Maha Kataragama devalaya, a shrine dedicated to the God of Kataragama. Kataragama is situated in the Monaragala District of Uva province, Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by jungle in the South Eastern region of Sri Lanka. The town has a venerable history dating back to the second century B.C, It also was the seat of government of many Sinhalese kings during the days of Rohana kingdom. At Kataragama Temple Pooja to please God will be held every morning and evening but the best one is the evening pooja commence 7.00 PM every day. You can see everything that is going on at this traditional Pooja. Devotees queuing to make their offerings in the temples with their big trays of fruit to offer to the God. Much noise and clanging whilst a red carpet leads the way for the principal offerings to be made. Usually an ornate procession in itself. Devotees also carrying coconuts which set alight. Devotees stand and make wishes in front of a small area before hurling the coconut inside. If it smashes, and it generally does, so stand back ... it is supposed to be good luck. Similarly, if it doesn't, it represents bad luck. It’s a common sight to experience that how devotees rolling around the floor of the temple complex in a ritual.Visiting Kataragama, is one of the most exciting and visually splendid places in Sri Lanka.

One of the great wildlife park in Srilanka. There are two bungalows inside the park which you need to book in advance. One of the park's most remarkable features is its undisturbed by the constant stream of safari jeeps and crowds found in other popular parks like Yala and Wilpattu. This allows for a truly immersive wildlife encounter, where encounters with majestic creatures unfold in their natural habitat without interruptions. It's a massive national park with various species and has a museum at the entrance where you can find skeletons, skins, and other fascinating information of the animals within the park. There are mostly buffaloes, deers, peacocks, and elephants, but you can also find foxes, crocodiles, and different types of birds, reindeer, hares, mongoose, wild boar and if you're lucky enough then a leopard too. However, it's disappointing to know that the bathroom facilities are of poor quality, and there is no proper access to more washrooms within the park, including rest stops but other than that it was a pretty good experience.

This allows for a truly immersive wildlife encounter, where encounters with majestic creatures unfold in their natural habitat without interruptions. With the expertise of a skilled safari driver, spotting elusive leopards becomes a thrilling possibility. A sight I've been fortunate enough to witness multiple times. But the wonders of this park extend far beyond leopards. From the sloth bears to the elephants and the wild water buffaloes, every moment here is filled with awe-inspiring encounters with Sri Lanka's diverse wildlife.Bird enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise within the park's rich avian diversity. During my birding in the park, I was able to see 84 different species in a single safari round including many migratory birds. The journey to Kumana National Park is an adventure in itself, as you traverse a 20-kilometer buffer zone teeming with wildlife. Along this route, I've been privileged to spot elusive species such as the rusty-spotted cat, crested porcupine, common palm civet, and numerous elephants, adding an extra layer of excitement to the journey.Adding to its allure, the park houses a historic Hindu temple, adding a cultural dimension to its natural splendor and making it a significant pilgrimage site for Hindu devotees. In conclusion, the Kumana National Park is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic wildlife experience immersed in the untouched beauty of nature. I highly recommend it to fellow nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers – you won't be disappointed.

One of the great wildlife park in Srilanka. There are two bungalows inside the park which you need to book in advance. Not much crowded like Yala and Wilpaththu national parks. Excellent place to visit for tourists who are on to Arugambay. Road network inside the park need to be re constructed as they have badly damaged due to the rains and flood situation. There are great variety of animals to watch including migrated birds. Safari jeep can be taken from the Kumana town. Using the normal vehicle is not advisable and you need a 4 wheel jeep to travel inside the park. There's about 16 km from Kumana town to the park entrance.

As with many of the other national parks in Sri Lanka, definitely would recommend Kumana as a great alternative to Yala. Much less crowded, but with same high odds of spotting wildlife, including leopards.

There are not that many types of animals. A bird paradise. Do not get out of the vehicle. Morning and evening animal viewing is good.

Located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka, the 18,149 hectares Kumana National Park is a well-known eco-tourism attraction and bird sanctuary where a multitude of birds breed and roost. Kumana National Park is the eastern sector of Yala National Park. One of the most significant features of the Kumana National Park is the 'Kumana Villu' - a 200 hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the 'Kumbukkan Oya' through a half mile long narrow channel. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds’ nest in May and June. Regular sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and little cormorants. The very rare black-necked stork has also been spotted at the swamp in Kumana National Park. Besides the prolific birdlife, Kumana National Park is also home to some of the mammals found in the larger Yala National Park, such as Elephants and Leopards. The vegetation in Kumana National Park consists mainly of mangrove trees, kumbuk trees and the karan fern, as well as the open marsh area. If you are on a bird watching tour in Sri Lanka, Kumana National Park is an 'absolute must'.
